England Squad Announced

But didn't Foden (and someone else) continue to get called up despite breaking COVID rules and going to a hotel room with some girls whilst away on England duty,

Maddison's "transgression" seems fairly minor in that context....
No the other one was mason greenwood and he never played again.

As I say foden is too good to ignore but he’s still not trusted when all are fit.

I agree, but I can only assume it's something to do with the interactions between Southgate and Maddison over that incident.

Maybe Foden was far more contrite.

Sadly probably has something to do with Foden playing for a top 6 club too.

Reasons for Trippier to go and play a big part.

1. He’s in great form and his club (sadly) are flying high in the premier league.

2. He can defend.

3. He has tournament experience and is a leader type.

4. He has great set piece delivery and can score free kicks.

5. He’s good for a pen too in a shoot out.

6. He’s versatile and can play on the left if needs be.

Tammy Abraham has to be in the squad for me, as he's closest in style to Kane.
Wilson is playing well but those hamstrings in that heat won't last.

Does the alternative need to be close in style? Would be good to have a different option and Wilson brings you that running in behind option and the fact he’s on fire too helps

Maguire and Grealish should not be in this world cup. What have they done for the past year? I’d rather see Maddison Tbh.

Absolutely - Foden plays for Man city though and Southgate is just a Ron Greenwood with better dress sense ; i.e. an FA yes man....

Grealish should be in the first 11 EVERY SINGLE TIME. He is the only player who can unlock a defence with ease. Bellingham is getting there but needs support from others given he is only 18 years old. Grealish could've been his foil...alas..Southgate will play the safe defensive football and as soon as we play someone decent were out. Same old same old from a terrified coach...

All depends on the formation ultimately but I guess he'll want to cover (at least) 4-3-3, 3-4-3 (incl variations) and potentially 4-2-3-1.

Walker is probably first choice but if injured I reckon it will be Trippier and White (who can also operate RCD). There might be room for one other...Stones? (who could also play multiple positions).

Further forward Bellingham and Foden have to start for me, although accommodating Foden has proven tricky in the past. If he plays wide left in a three, who starts on the right? Sterling? Saka?

I actually think a three of Rice, Bellingham and Grealish/Mount offers nice balance in midfield, although I'd expect Phillips to droo in against better opposition.

We shouldn't take anyone who you look at and think, if their direct competition is injured, could this player play all the games and we'd be fairly confident of being able to compete at the highest level
So if Pickford is out, i'd be ok with Ramsdale
If Kane is out, i'd be ok with Rashford

Abraham, Toney, Wilson etc aren't good enough. Squad fillers.

Rashford isn’t great as a number 9 though. Best deployed as a wide forward

There are a lot of fitness and form issues in defence. I think Trippier should play.
I'd love to see Grealish, Rice and Bellingham together. Southgate will I reckon play it "safe" and play two pure holders ahead of a fluffy defence.
Kane, Foden and Saka the front three for me

Southgate will be his own man and play his faves - Maguire, Sterling etc - and will shut out the more creative players.
I'm not sure I've seen anybody express that James Madison should not be on the plane.

Can't pick em all, Maddison is current flavour of the month....seems to be the Alan Hudson or Matt Le Tissier of this generation. Gordon at Everton always looks decent tom me too. Does Toney betting scandal create a late opening for our Chubs :)

If you look at Maddison’s stats over the past 18 months and watch him regularly it’s ridiculous that we are even talking about him maybe getting in the squad. He should be nailed on to be going on the plane
