England EUROS squad

His defensive side of the game definitely needs improving.

But he's without doubt, a big game player.

22 years old and already got 2 CL finals to his name - including a win, plus a PL medal.....and it's not as if he was a fringe player or was carried to those, he actually played huge roles in those routes to the finals and the PL title win.

None of the other FBs, other than Walker can boast as such.

Agree we have better defensive rightbacks, however, we don't have a single full back (never mind just right back) that can influence a game and create chances like he can.

The corner yesterday in the 96th minute proved exactly that.

If we needed a goal from a corner, or freekick, then I wouldn't chose anyone else to take that set piece.

Nothing to do with attitude according to the Athletic. If Southgate wants defensive full-backs it's also strange Wan-Bissaka isn't even considered. He has the best defensive ability by a long way.
So what is the inference on why he hasn't been selected, if true? Although of course the Athletic could be wrong and he is selected, or hasn't been selected on attitude.

Whoever gets left out of the 26, some fans will definitely kick up a major fuss. Southgate has got a lot more right than wrong

They're suggesting he doesn't fit Southgate's system.

Only injuries or a change of system would get TAA in the squad....obviously this could change.

He can change games, but he can change them negatively as well. Youhave to play a certain way to get the value out of TAA. You have to make sure that there is no one else playing that flank, that anyone on that side tucks in to make space for his runs. Maybe that isn't how southgate wants to play?

HE does do an excellent inswinger, but we have Mount and Grealish who are equally good probably offer better variety of dead ball delivery. Foden has a decent deadball too

Perhaps Southgate is planning a 3-4-3 with Walker in the back three and Trippier at wing-back. I completely understand taking those two but struggle to see why TAA isn't in a 26 player squad.

That would be my thinking as well. If it's essentially a wing-back role then Trippier gets the nod for me.

TAA has the engine to get up and down the pitch all day long but I'd be nervous of his positional play if there's no one playing in front or behind him (although to be fair he's had plenty of practice at Liverpool, Salah barely knows where his own half is, let alone tries to occupy space in it).

The problem is we aint the best defensively and playing TAA in a back 4 aint an option at all. And changing formations to suit TAA in is exactly why we was awful in the 2000's ( scholes on the wing ? ) Whenever Trent comes up against a half decent winger he is clueless.

I said you could make a claim. If you think that it's impossible to make a claim that 100% fit Grealish should be first name on the sheet then I despair. There will be plenty of Villa fans who have watched him develop over the past x years into a brilliant player. I'm not saying that I claim he should be first on the team sheet, but people have battered Southgate for not selecting him, the media was absolutely full of it for 6 months before Southgate finally selected him. The proof is out there already that some people do think he is a must. I'd bet every Dortmund fan and a lot of British ones would agree on Sancho too. Yes Maddison and Barnes are periphery but there will be plenty of fans who feel they must be in the squad and will complain if they are not and we fail to win.
I didn't say it was impossible to make a claim for the others. I really rate Grealish but Foden has been incredible. Of course the fans of the clubs Maddison, Grealish etc play for are going to claim they should be playing; they're partisan, that's natural. As a neutral Foden must start alongside Kane. Sterling, Rashford and Grealish should be fighting it out for that last spot.

Phillips, Rice and Ward-Prowse. He's more than capable of playing in the sitting midfield role.

I did almost retract my comment on the basis of Ward-Prowse to be fair. Is Henderson not going to be fit? His leadership qualities shouldn't be underestimated. I think he'll go even if he's half fit.

I think a big mistake previous England managers have made has been taking players who aren't fully fit to tournaments.

I do rate Henderson but I'd rather take a 100% fit Ward-Prowse or Phillips than a 50% fit Henderson.

There's an argument for taking Henderson for his experience in big games and his leadership qualities. I reckon we can get to the QF without him, but if we are to progress from there, his presence could be key. It's difficult to justify taking him if he has no chance of playing whatsoever, but if he's back in full training before the end of the month, I would definitely have him in the squad.

As good as Foden, Rice, Mount, Sancho and Greenwood are, they are all very young. Grealish and Phillips are a bit older, but have no tournament or Champions League experience. You need that balance between experience and youth and I don't see anyone else offering that in the middle of the park than Henderson.

Hard to argue against Bamford getting called up right now.

He's got the most goals and assists of any top flight English player outside of Harry Kane now.
