Djed Spence

Alex Crook from TalkSport -

“I think Tottenham felt the longer the window dragged on, Middlesbrough and certainly Chris Wilder, would be keen to part company with Spence.

“They eventually had to bow to Tottenham’s asking price like they appear to have done, because I couldn’t see Spurs massively improving their offer.”

I said this weeks ago on another Spence thread on here. We wanted 15, Spurs wanted 10.... We should have sold him for 12.5 at the beginning of these negotiations.

We've gained nothing but lost 2-3 weeks.
Saying it weeks ago on another thread doesn't mean it is true.
We've no idea what level of negotiations have taken place or even the true amount involved. Other respected journalists suggest that the upfront payment is more than £12.5m

To be fair I said he'd play for England as I'm sure it's a clause. You can still have a Stella season and not get in the England side.

I mean 'one good season' is 35-40 games as first choice. Then he's instantly worth more than 12.5mil.

A first choice RB at a so called 'big 6' side is worth over 30-50mil? He doesn't need to be better than Trent / James or even Walker.

Don't get me wrong he maybe w*nk and never get a kick and be loaned out in a year. Then we've made 12.5mil on someone we thought wasn't particularly good. Championship maybe is his level. Yet you'd think he'd get 'better' at spurs under Conte.

It's decent money for a guy who the majority (not just warnock) thought was brainless and couldn't defend (he really couldn't).
Yeah, I agree with most of that mind.

I think he might get a cap or might make the squad at some point, but will really need some game time, but I can't see him having any chance of getting in the World Cup squad, and if we do ok there, then he's going to find it incredibly hard. RB/RWB is probably the most congested position in the English side.

Hard to pin down 35-40 games a season for a top 6 side, in one position, as a transfer from the Championship. I saw Sessegnon as a much, much, much brighter prospect and he really struggled to break through.

Only Trent is probably worth over 50m though (and Cancaelo), and he's a bit of a one off. I think there's only been like 5 RB's go for over 50m, so it's surely extremely unlikely for Spence. Wan Bissaka went for around 50m (which everyone said was overpaying) but I think but he looked a better player at Palace in the Prem, than Spence did in the champo.

Yeah, Conte might see him as something he can work on, but I suppose that will come down to Spence's attitude, more than his ability, he's surely got to be up for it, but not sure how he will react on the bench.

I'll take 12.5m all day long, and if we get any more I'll be made up. Even if he ends up being a worldie in a few years then I won't be that fussed, as Jones looks the better prospect to me, and you can only base your calls on the info available at the time.

We’d be wetting ourselves getting £13m for a player not even established in our first team this time last season . We’ve got our wide men sorted , our keeper sorted and the this lad is now going to fund our strikers , it’s not going too bad imo . Muniz could be here next week.
We still need a few numbers but it always goes well into the window before main players come in .

Aye seems like three of the most important boxes have been ticked 🙏...but not the most important.

Two new keepers (one ex man city, and the other his clubs fans player, and players player of the year) ✅
Good left sided option (much better than I had hoped) ✅
Spence out for good money ✅

The only box left now is the strikers, but it's the hardest box to tick ❌

Have to agree 123. Even if we only get 12.5M for Spence that is unbelievable considering a) He has never impressed, playing for us, b) This time last year nobody batted an eyelid when he was sent out on loan, c) We have a better player in Jones for the same position, d) We don’t want him back, e) Even with all the new hype, he is still defensively suspect. So far we have improved the squad from last year with a new vocal centre back, a left wingback and a number 2 goalie. We now have money to buy players we actually need such as a number 1 goalie, left sided defender, another midfielder and three strikers. Hopefully the Spence saga is now over and we can all get excited looking forward to new signings for next season. (y)

Cannot wait to see his Spurs future. Will watch his rise to stardom with glee. Probably last about 3 months.

A few BTL comments taken from below article in The Times.
Looks like even the Forest fans could see he was inconsistent - then again may be sour grapes?

Saw every game he played for Forest last season. My personal opinion is he was heavily marked towards the end of the season when teams knew more about him. Quality player and if given the opportunity at Spurs will shine. Not as good as Nico Williams though.

Was a great player and asset for us at Forest. He was relatively unknown and got away with it for most of the season. Can get lost in the long grass when he is pushed wide. I wish him well, but have doubts about him at the highest level.

I’ve seen him have good games and terrible games at Forest…it’s a punt from Spurs.

Always a punt with a player from a lower division, but with the improved vibe at the club and everything to play for, plus a top manager and top senior pros to learn from, he couldn't have a better environment to develop in.

I think we all expected around £20m+ but Levy isn't stupid in the young guns market as he's been burned before with players that never worked out.

£12.5m basic is disappointing to me.

If he hits enough add-ons, fair enough, but I doubt they'll be too easy to hit if it's taken a month of negotiation for a compromise to be reached.

Obviously if you'd offered me this a year ago, I'd have snapped your hand off, but it definitely feels like we're the side that conceded in the negotiations.

I think the fact he has already been rejected by two respected clubs like Boro and Fulham plus Warnock going public about his concerns about attitude will mean that Spence will command less than he might have done had he come through the ranks at one club with a clean report.

I don't think anyone expected 20m but maybe hoped we could push to that.

15m is where my head was, and it sounds like we've got pretty close to that, with add ons pushing up to 20

For me the biggest relief is that it look as though this Spence saga is finally coming to an end!
Even £12m+ add ons and taking into account we got loan fees for him from last season, this is from a player we picked up for free it's actually a good bit of business from the club and keeps inline with the sustainability model the club is aiming for. It's not inconceivable that this deal could be the difference between us pushing for a relatively comfortable top 6 finish or scraping it out with 4 other teams for 6th place come the end of the season. This deal hopefully means we don't need to sell any of the club first team player to fund the rebuild and gives the club a little leeway on FFP to strengthen the positions we need.

£12.5m For Djed Spence?

Lumley - Steffen - Loan
Daniels - Roberts - Free
Hall - Lenihan - Free
Bamba - Greaves - £2.5m (1 year left)
Peltier - Aji Alese - "The Ameobi Money"
Spence - Smith - Free
Payero - Anderson - Loan
Siliki - Choudhury £4m (1 year left)
Coulson - Giles - Loan
Akpom - Armstrong - Loan
Ikpeazu - Muniz - £6m

I'd be happy with that!

THEN A MYSTERY STRIKER
From the Derby County Mel Morris Bonus, Man Utd Money, The Spurs Money.. all the leftovers.

If we managed to buy muniz and he hits 20 goals he’d be worth more than spence this time next year . It would be a strange world we live in if we paid £6m for a young Brazilian striker and sell spence for more than twice that but il take it 👍😎
