Carricks refusal to change system

Einstein was referring to closed systems. Football isn't. Think of it like this. If you want to play a melody on a guitar you repeat it over and over and you improve.

I have heard this quote so often used in the wrong set of circumstances.
Practising a melody on a guitar is not the same as football either. Continually playing the same system won't guarentee improvement.

In fact I would say the Einteain quote is closer reality of football. If something isn't working, doing it over and over again isn't going to make it any more likely to succeed.

From the horses mouth in todays presser. Said the system suits the players. I fear he's doomed if hes not prepared to change a system which is clearly not working.
Manchester United were torn behind the scenes on how to play, according to reports at the time..

Manchester United interim coach Michael Carrick disagreed with how Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was setting up his team - but was vetoed by the Norwegian on how the club should proceed, according to reports.

Backroom staff members Carrick and Kieran McKenna both wanted to move to a back three sooner, say the Manchester Evening News, while Solskjaer had intended to change to a 4-3-3 formation in pre-season.

United flirted with the 4-3-3 at home to Villarreal - the formation that Solskjaer implemented when he first arrived at Old Trafford - but it wasn't until the 5-0 hammering to Liverpool that the Red Devils actually changed their shape, implementing a 3-5-2 for the 3-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur.

Dressing room sources have also claimed that former Under-18 coach McKenna's methods have been wildly unpopular with a number of senior players with the description "school teacher" being labelled at the coach.

Carrick set up in a 4-2-3-1 against Villarreal for the 2-0 win last night, shifting to a 4-4-2 off the ball but with plenty of players switching roles during the match.

Many were surprised that Carrick and other staff members were not sacked with Solskjaer. Paul Scholes noted before the match on BT Sport that the former United star should have taken as much responsibility for the poor coaching, with many United fans wondering whether Carrick had the pedigree to coach United in the interim period.

So.. able to change and implement a successful 3-5-2 at Man Utd.. but not willing to change here at Middlesbrough?

Woodgate has seen the necessary change* under Pulis.. which brought his most successful period and with his own tenure* which resulted in him winning manager of the month!

*forced changes due to injury.

Carrick doesnt / hasnt refused to change "the system".
Absolute myth.
Made up by anti-vaxers, Brexiteers, Boris supporters, flag waving, council-culture, spivs, chavs, Truss - following, meat eating, climate deniers, Sunlunist deckchairs and Trump conspiracy theorists.(n)

The covid vaccine has made some people very poorly, Brexit didn’t need to be executed so badly, Boris wasn’t as bad as Truss or Rishi, nowt wrong with a bit of flag waving..
THREE FIVE TWO
Carrick needs to wake up and get his big boy pants one, Woodgate need to give him a shake, get Warnock back, get Wilder back, Pulis and Monk.. two points in seven games!

Who on earth is nodding their head to Carrick throwing a bunch of newbies to the slaughter?
Let’s get Leo back and Cattermole.. we are a bunch of fannies!

The analogy is wrong. Plain and simple. It is often used in the wrong context.

Interestingly enough, einstien probably never said it.

Playing a bad melody on your guitar progressively better through practise is still not a treat for the ears.

McKenna at Ipswich (who was Carrick's #2 at MU) is using the same system as us, and has for the first 7 games (6 wins).

I think the difference is they have two very defense minded CMs (funny that they're Morsy and Luongo) - so they're very balanced in playing 5 defensive players and 5 attacking players.
** assuming they only attack down one side (like we did with Giles vs. Smith last season).

We have Hackney and O'Brien who are two of our better players in my opinion - but are they defense minded? - Is pushing the two CDMs forward leaving too much space to be exploited out wide?
- Fans have been giving Engel a hard time, but he's losing 1 on 1s against wingers... Should he be left exposed in 1 on 1 positions as often as he is?
- WBA gave Smith a hard time - and got into plenty of space on that side too - eventually leading to him being sent off.

I think we'd suit more of a 4 - 5 - 1 (or 4-1-4-1) but it would mean giving one CM the job of staying defensive. O'Brien played a similar role for Huddersfield.

Smith - Fry - Lenihan - Bangura
- - - - - - - O'Brien - - - - - - - -
Forss - McGree - Hackney - Rogers
- - - - - - - - Lath - - - - - - - - -

How could we ever find player like Morsy and Luongo?!?!?!

Hackney reminds me of an earlier version of Johnny Howson.. and Lewis O'Brien a more mature Leeds era Adam Forshaw.. neither particularly defensive , Hackney looks stong in the interception department tbf.. Terrell Agyemang looked VERY promising in pre season when he was playing in midfield.. not fully cooked.. but way ahead of Dan Barlaser in my pecking order. Howson could play that role sitting infront of the defence.. as could Terrell Agyemang imo

Hackney and O'Brien look good together as two 8s where as McGree an 8/10 looks to be more effective further up the pitch.
