Boris about to give an update

The response is unfortunately... We've got immediately ditched the plan.

Everyone go nowhere unless you want to!

If you wanted to do the original plan then you have to go through with it, this just sows panic left right and centre and will not help the situation one bit on your store shelves at the super market, with the businesses about to have to let go most of their staff. The untold damage will never be spoken of and you can guarantee the wealthiest will be buying up assets for pennies on the pound as this evolves.

The difference is we had the blessing of 3 weeks grace from the impact of COVID19 that other European countries didn’t have. Time for us to get our policy and guidance in place - we seem to have not made the most of it.

I was thinking about this earlier and now that it's exactly what the government have done I wondered how this actually works. If the government closed pubs and restaurants would those businesses be due some sort of compensation or insurance money or is that not how it works? By not shutting them but telling people not to go they're essentially forcing them to close without doing it themselves, is that to avoid having to pay them money? Or would they never be due money anyway?

I think Boris is giving the whole population a little too much credit, saying, we have a mature people who will do the right thing........we all know a lot of people won't stop going to pubs and clubs until it is enforced......

I think it's partly that. They are relying on the public not to go to the pub rather than the pub saying you can't come in. That puts the decision on the pub and the people and doesn't take away people's freedom. Might not be the right way to do things. I suspect if pub attendance is still high they will then mandate closure.

That said it was irritating that Johnson stopped just short of compulsorily closing pubs and restaurants and clubs. He expects the proprietors to do the “ sensible thing”. They are desperate for money. They won’t be sensible in terms of public health but sensible in terms of the business viability.
He stopped short for a reason to protect the insurance system. If pubs and clubs close because of no business but they are not “forced to” by law they may not be able to claim on business interruption insurance. He should have ordered pubs to close or said nothing. As it is he has left business disruption insurance in the air with wet no guts policy . Thousands of pubs and restaurants will go to the wall.

I did not want to point the finger at just people from the UK. However I do agree with your comment.

We had Swedish hotel guests go out on our golf course. After our lock down. With the authorities having to be called to remove them from the course.

Let’s face it you can't really compare Swedish trying to get some golf holes in with British knob heads taunting police with “we have got the flu“ and drinking openly in the streets from cans.

"As long as he shows leadership and honesty then he'll be ok "
Ha ha ha, very good Dude, stop it, my guts are aching.

Despite me being a devout socialist and no supporter of Boris I do have an undying faith that the better angels of human nature will win any battle.
I really hope you are right Dood.

This is serious now and it will either be the making or the breaking of the nation.

He seemed very wishy-washy in regard to help for businesses
Bravo, to the reporter who pulled him up about the vague answers.

If large gatherings are not being supported anymore (by police etc) can we go back to having illegal raves in the countryside? (y)

I'm currently in the Algarve. Only 10 cases (as of last night- update 13 today). Bars now forced to close a 9pm, many just not opening. A city like Lagos is usually starting to buzz with tourists about this time of year. It's like a ghost town. Had to queue to get into the supermarket tonight. Strong measures and stronger show of solidarity from the populous.

The point is that the management could call the authorities to remove people from the closed course. As this was enforced closure of sports facilities. Not just asked for.

Are we having 'substantial testing' in relation to other countries? FFS even front line NHS weren't being tested.
Did we learn anything new from that conference?
Why stop going to the pubs when our kids are gonig to bring it from school?
Can't wait for the next instalment. Still none the wiser.

“UK Music trade body warns that venues will “go to the wall” without greater clarity about a official ban on mass gatherings as insurers won’t pay out” Impending sense of dread that some of our favourite haunts over the past 20 years are about to disappear

Boris doing it on the cheap again? Maybe next time a reporter will grow a pair.

Johnson will lie about anything and eveything so long as he thinks he will get away with it. As will his cronies and hangers on. I don't think for a moment that this crisis will be any different.
