Blackburn match attendance

The one great myth around the FA Cup is that it has been dying a slow death by a thousand cuts. In reality, the Premier League killed it stone dead almost immediately. In our 1991/92 promotion season our biggest home gate was in the FA cup. It even beat the attendance at St James’ Park on the Boxing Day. In our roughly equivalent 1994/95 promotion season every single league gate was higher. Only the League Cup was less.

What killed it IMHO was 4 teMs (Man U, Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal) playing weakened teams AND still winning it every season for 12 years from 96 onwards.

If they'd played weakened teams and lost, it would have been fine. It still meant loads to Wigan and Pompey to win it.

However, they'd rest their stars until the semi finals maybe, and it felt like the cup didn't really start until then.

I don't blame Man U for not playing one year. The cup was dying before that. That's always been people taking a chance to put a spiteful boot in.

it’s against competition rules that you can’t sell cup tickets with league tickets?
Nerd that I am I checked. I'm sure it used to be. It isn't any more apparently though you need to:
"advise The Association of the total value (including VAT) and number of its season ticket sales for that Season upon request; and include in match receipts reported on the Statement of Receipts and Payment Form the total value of season ticket sales divided by the maximum number of Matches in any other Competition (as defined in Rule A2 of The Association’s Rules) that the season ticket holder is entitled to attend during the Season."

So I can see why we wouldn't bother...

Looks like we're also out of date on the need to agree prices as well. Same rules for this year say:
"For Competition Matches in the Competition Proper, the Home Club shall determine and confirm the prices of admission within seven days of the relevant draw, subject to a minimum admission charge of £10.00 for all spectators other than concessions."

So the crowds disappeared in the first half of the nineties because fans were put off by the weakened teams the big four were going to put out five to ten years later? In this universe cause is supposed to come before effect.

Possibly it was happening then. I don't recall it falling off that early.

For example, I remember the cup run under LL being of great excitement and very well attended.

Still, the domination of the clubs I mentioned did start before '96. They won it for the 3 years before Everton's moment in '95.

I can't recall ever missing a match due to it being so cold outside. But we've decided to not bother tomorrow due to it being so cold outside.

I don't ever wish us defeat, but a loss tomorrow means more games for Blackburn and ultimately that could work in our favour I suppose in the league.

UTB. Also stay warm!

Pompey 4 2 Anderton scored from a corner? Or man city won 2 1 2 in the last minute

Absolutely no chance we'll lose tomorrow.

Cold tomorrow but 4 degrees and Sunny on match day.

Football scarves and football woolly hats were designed for current temperatures. Those ones bought by relatives for FMTTM posters. Get to the Match.
