Biggest Boro player letdown?

My abiding memory of Mido was watching him spill onto the pitch as a 2nd half substitute during an FA Cup tie at Mansfield. What the hell were you thinking of, Southgate?

Peter Davenport - I still hold him responsible for relegation and Bruce Rioch’s demise.

If he had done what he was brought in to do then that team with all the emotional support it had tapped into could have gone on to big things.

I think we were 6th when we signed him.
Couldnt agree more Holgate, he had the opposite affect on the close knitted team, I think if we'd made a big signing in another crucial position we'd have stayed up

Yep Davenport all the way for me. Worst purchase and caused the start of the demise of Riochs babes team.

Mido is a great shout, Nathan Porritt perhaps? definitely Ravel Morrison. For me the biggest disappointment is with Adam Johnson ******* away his chance with Man City and actively choosing to nonce it up at Sunderland.

Davenport for mee too.

Surprised to see a few names on this list: I'm surprised expectations for Mido and st Ledger were so high.

Davenport and Boersma. I remember Jimmy Armfield thought we had pulled off a great coup getting Davenport- suggesting he could be the key player towards us actually winning something. Oh well....

Phil Boersma Jacks record signing 72k. Came from Liverpool was useless in midfield no good in attack as well 47 app 3 goals. Brought in to link with Armstron Souness and Murdoch. When Charltons champions were crying out for a striker the missing part of the jigsaw.

Phil Boersma, George Kinnell, John Gannon, Mido, Alves, Carlos Marinelli, Ricardinho(World Cup winning midfield player scored 84 career goals in 485 matches but wasn't good enough to get on pitch for us:cry:), Kike(the other one), Johnny Vincent

Edit: John Maloney, Kevin Beatty, Nobby Stiles.

Believe you me that was an improvement on how big he was in a reserve game at Billingham Synthonia a couple of weeks earlier

Southgate should never have signed him. He has a track record of scoring on his debut then falling out with his parent club not long after

For me it’s jordan Rhodes I thought finally we have our goal machine for once we’d got the one player I always wanted.

But then bizarrely we just wasted him, first that weird spell of “resting him” after he signed but I thought ok aitor must have a plan but nope.

It was all odd very very odd, watching him run up and down the touch line week in week out and the look on his face as he went unused again was so frustrating.

He should have been the missing part in our team but he never was.

As I say just odd.

I know Karanka did like to rotate the strikers but considering the money we'd spent on him I thought at the time surely he has to be starting every game. I got the impression he was another 'gift' from the Chairman and Karanka resented it.

I also couldn't understand why we sold him in January. It was so short-sighted of the club when you consider at that point we felt there was a strong possibility we would be going down. We could have had Bamford, Rhodes and Stuani as our striking options the following season, meaning we wouldn't have had to spend £31m on Britt, Braithwaite and Fletcher. That money could have been used to strengthen other areas.

Oddly, for reasons I can't even fathom myself I expected Mido to work out. He had enough good attributes to be an asset to us as a striker, I just assumed he'd knuckle down and not want to plss his career away.

I was wrong.

Mido was a frustrating one. I remember him working really hard pre-season and looking trim at the start of the 08/09 season. He scored a few goals but Southgate was preferring Alves and Tuncay as his front two, and if I remember rightly Mido just seemed to spit his dummy out and pretty much down tools because of it.

Boersma, Davenport, Thomson(Bobby), Buckley, Hankin, Payton, Mido, Alves, Ricardinho, Branco, Reizeger, Boyd off the top of my head, several others exist.

Rhodes was indeed yet another gift, AK stated so when asked about his signing. I remember the deal was off on the Saturday and resurrected on the Sunday, which may well have been through a difference of opinion between Head Coach and Owner for the wobble, who knows. We did well to get our money back there mind. I’d bet Sheff Weds regretted buying him.
