Biggest Boro player letdown?

Yeah, we could have gone 4-4-2 with Rhodes and Gestede up front. I remember at the time when we signed Bamford and Gestede. They were underwhelming signings but I also remember thinking at least the club has a long-term plan, so that if we do go down we'll have players who had proven themselves at that level. Instead, we decided to spend the majority of our transfer budget on strikers, meaning Bamford barely got a look in under Monk and of course Rhodes was gone before the season had even started.
I don't think they did have a great partnership did they? I know the both scored lots, but that good season Gestede had he often started up top on his own.
I agree Rhodes could've played more, but he was a far more limited footballer that I expected, and he's done nothing for years

I've just checked. It was the 14/15 season. Gestede made 39 appearances and Rhodes made 45 appearances, so they must have started the majority of games together.

They scored 41 goals combined as well. Again you just wonder 'what if'.

Expected Vossen to be brilliant at this level, he had a decent season but expected much more

Didn't Gestede score 30? Hard to believe really I'm sure they both featured in most games, but I believe a fair proportion they didn't both start and often replaced eachother. That's certainly what my Blackburn supporting mate claimed at the time anyway.

Definitely Davenport. I remember signing him for what was a fortune at the time.

He was awful😕

Gazza seemed strange. He was clearly on the decline and we would never see the best of him.

Fair enough. Gestede scored 20 that season. He'd scored 12 goals in 21 appearances the season before as well which is a decent return.

To be honest I think he could have been decent here if it hadn't have been for injuries. I remember him starting the season off well under Monk, then him picking up an injury and he had a long stint out of the team. Pulis of course tried to make him the focal point of the team, and he took a while to get up to speed but the same night when he scored those 2 goals vs Hull he picked up an injury and that was his season over.

Gestede had one good season in his career. IMHO, pound for pound, he was the worst signing in our history. That transfer fee and his salary were shameful. Horrific excuse for a footballer.

Mendieta certainly didn't let us down. He was superb in his first season and it was our fault that we gave him the long contract... certainly wasn't his.

I don’t think he’s been mentioned and I forgot to mention him

Michael Ricketts!

Sorry, you missed my point. A great player let down by Boro as he was played out of position for most of his time here. Played centrally he was absolute class
