Biggest Boro player letdown?

By that, I'm talking about a player who should have been excellent for us but ultimately turned out to be a disappointment.

I'll go with Braithwaite. Even more so now I look back and think what could have been. He really should have been too good for that level. He was a mercenary but I also feel we misused him and wasted a real talent.

Gazza, for what we paid. He had some moments but more ideological signing than constructive

De Roon- modern day one. Yes he did a job, nothing wrong with that. He wasn’t what we expected before he arrived

Reizeger- shocking that says it all

Kris boyd should have been prolific in the championship but failed us big time

Mido should have scored the goals to keep up in the prem but we all knew we were getting an unfit over weight striker who couldnt lace viduka's boots

Er, it has got to be Downing hasn t it? As much as he was great until in his first spell with us, coming back he should have been excellent and wasn't. Should have been like Merson dropping down a league.

Don't actually think that was his fault either. Massive dissapointment for him too I imagine.

For me it’s jordan Rhodes I thought finally we have our goal machine for once we’d got the one player I always wanted.

But then bizarrely we just wasted him, first that weird spell of “resting him” after he signed but I thought ok aitor must have a plan but nope.

It was all odd very very odd, watching him run up and down the touch line week in week out and the look on his face as he went unused again was so frustrating.

He should have been the missing part in our team but he never was.

As I say just odd.

Peter Davenport - I still hold him responsible for relegation and Bruce Rioch’s demise.

If he had done what he was brought in to do then that team with all the emotional support it had tapped into could have gone on to big things.

I think we were 6th when we signed him.

I suppose your high level of disappointment will probably be set by your level of expectation. Equally your high level of enjoyment is increased by low expectations.

So your selection will be personal to you.

I was very disappointed with Downing in his second spell, he had shown very good form for West Ham, and ability wise he was definitely a cut above the Championship. His return in goals, assists and performances was well below what I expected.

Gascoigne and Alves I didn't expect to work out for various reasons.

Oddly, for reasons I can't even fathom myself I expected Mido to work out. He had enough good attributes to be an asset to us as a striker, I just assumed he'd knuckle down and not want to plss his career away.

I was wrong.

George Friend I expected very little from, same with Ayala. So the years of good service from them seems more enjoyable, the same as with Mustoe.

I agree with you about Mido. Even though what should have been his prime footballing days are long gone he has now got himself ridiculously fit and is in better shape than at any point previously. Schwarzer said from talking to Mido he has now acknowledged himself that he didn't apply himself correctly during his career and in effect he wasted his talent. A real shame it took so long for the penny to drop.

I remember being buzzing when we signed Alves and Kris Boyd as I thought they would be great at their respective levels and really push us on. Both really disappointed me so would have to be one of them 2 for me
