I think they should both throw a sickie like my work colleagues do.It appears the less you are around the more your reputation grows,a bit like O'Brien.

I like them both - They are both youngish - playing in a new league and very rarely offered much support (look at the difference in Jones tracking back vs Greenwood/Silvera/Rogers).

In some games I think Engel looks like he could put it all together and be a top left back - at other times his head goes and he makes a flurry of errors.

I would persist with the two of them - tell them to run themselves into the ground while on with the plan of the other replacing them at 60 minutes. It's our one option for rotation.

well yeah, ones 25 , that's 7 years classed as an adult! No language barrier, no real culture barrier either as northern European. I'm not saying settled in to be showing us what a 'star' he is. I'm saying settled in as to be not worrying about anything other than wanting to train well and give good match performances.
I moved to london as a 24 year old and struggled for about 2 years.

I think as a team we have problems in both full back positions we concede far too many goals due to both sides. Engel is looking a lot better going forward these days, but looks terrible defending. He was at fault for all 3 goals against coventry. He lacks recovery pace and acceleration. He gives the ball away too often when passing under no pressure. He get dragged under the ball too many times defending crosses. Can't fault his effort. Bangura looks shaky at times but he does have that recovery pace. We haven't looked that much better on the othersife mind, no matter who has played there.

Ditto. I have friends that came down for university and stayed on, whereas others - myself included - had two or three cracks at it before settling down. Everyone is different, including footballers. Van den Berg settled immediately by the looks of it. He plays like a 29 year-old. Others need much longer.

Engel not good enough. Poor defender with too many errors.
Sloppy in possession. Frequent individual errors.

Seen less of Bangura but seems a better footballer. Decent on the ball and more athletic. Also seems poor defensively and a bit erratic with his positioning. More confident that Bangura could become a good player.

If by "good enough" we mean good enough to play in a team pushing for promotion, I think neither are currently there. If by "good enough" we mean happy to hang around Championship mid table with a chance at play-offs then I think I would be happy enough giving Bangura a run in them team and see how he went.

I've seen enough of Engel to think he's got too many mistakes in him to play competative Championship football.

I don't understand those using the "Giles was also poor defensively" to justify why both players are good enough. Giles was absolutely superb on the ball. Not just putting in crosses (which were an excellent weapon for us last season) but his all round game play in possession was excellent. Very, very tidy player. Bangura and Engel are absolutely nowhere near his standard hence why no Premier League clubs would even consider paying £5m for either of them. Comparing them is just silly.

Yet that is what you've just done :p

I think Engel can be sloppy in possession. However, watch how often he passes first time. When in a forward position he looks to see if there is a forward pass on, if it's not he instantly passes back, waiting for the opportunity.

If there is an opportunity, he either plays it quickly forward, again one touch, or looks to run in behind.

I suspect he is playing directly to Carricks instruction and that is why he is favoured in the LWB position.

To his defending. As I have said he can be sloppy in possession, again, probably because he plays one touch too often, particularly at the back in tight quaters. However, he gets no cover at all and is often doubled up on. Perhaps by design, perhaps because our midfield are slow to get back. In any event, the way we play, we will always be vulnerable.

Now for his attacking quality. He tends to cross the ball on the floor and look for passes rather than someones head. His stats compare very favourably with Giles on a game by game basis.

Is he good enough for a promotion chasing team? I don't know but we do know that Giles wasn't.

I suppose the question for recruitment is are we recruiting specifically to get out of the champ or are recruiting players who can grow into Premier league players. To me engel and giles will never be successful premier league players bangura i will reserve judgement for now. Do we get players to sign one season and discard the next if promoted. Only rdb rogers and dieng are showing promises of being capable of playing at a higher level.

Yet Giles was bought by a promotion winning club…

But couldn't achieve it with a team that lost 30 million of talent.

Also not sure how much playing time he gets with luton.... Seems Jonathan has done the work on this.
This isn't tough is it?

You said Giles wasn't good enough for a promotion chasing team.
Yet he was good enough for us - he played very well and was one of the best players in a team that went very close to getting promoted.
He was definitely good enough for a promotion chasing team.

He was also deemed good enough for a promotion winning club, because they bought him for £5m.
I'd expect if Luton go down and he stays with them, he will prove once again that he is a good enough for a Championship promotion chasing team, as that will be what Luton will be.

Giles was only good enough when the style of play was built around him. When Lenihan stayed zonal to mark the space he left going forward, or when Howson moved across to cover to allow Giles and Hackney to both move forward, even when Smith moved across to cover for Howson.

It was very plan A. Worked perfectly for most of the season and he did very very well - one of our most exciting full backs of recent years....

However, his way of playing has been totally found out in the premier league. I've watched a couple of games and he's been very average... which is why he's been replaced in the starting 11.

I also don't think he'd do as well if he was with us this season, without the consistency at the back or the partnership he had with Akpom.

He certainly wasn't good enough to get us promoted with 3 players who went for 30 million, so no he wasn't good enough.

As you say, it isn't tough is it?

Post 50 you write Giles wasn't good enough for a promotion chasing team.
Yet he was, as he was one of the best players in a promotion chasing team.
Another promotion chasing - and promotion winning - team thought him good enough for them and bought him.
So there are two for you.

Come on, catch on Laughing boy.
