Alex Gilbert

Gilbert, didn't give the ball.away, he found pockets space, he was hungry to get on the ball as much as possible and effect the game, arrived late on the edge of the box and cracked a shot into the top corner.

Played well when he came on against Leeds.
Ticked practically every box up till now in the short time we have seen him.

Thought he did okay, still seems lightweight but there is certainly a player in there. Was it him who put in the fantastic outside of the boot ball over the top at the start of the game?

He played well yesterday but his biggest problem is he is playing as a no10 and azaz is far superior in that same role. For me moving azaz to wide left to accommodate gilbert really negates azaz's effectiveness. As well as Gilbert played i thought after he went off and azaz moved inside we were far more threatening. Azaz was superb yesterday especially second half and will be a star player for us next season.

Gilbert clearly has talent hes a clever carrick type footballer who is only going to improve with experience so definitely want to keep for next season

I thought he played well yesterday and looks a very classy player. I’m pleased for him, it seemed like he was going to be one of those players that Carrick just didn’t fancy - like Muinez or Djiksteel, but he’s really taken his chance and hopefully won Carrick over now.

Do agree with the Azaz comment though.

I though Azaz did play as a 10 yesterday, with Gilbert to the left of him.

Having said that Gilbert played very narrow and in effect neither were rigid in the positions they took up - we were very much attacking more along the right side of the pitch, so Thomas did well defensively given a lack of protection and also exploiting the space it created when we had the ball.

I think Gilbert just needs to bulk up a bit over the summer, but he looks like he could be a steal at £600k.

I don’t think it’s a case of not fancying him. He said he has had a lot to learn and work on, and obviously that takes time. He was playing Brentford B team and his only taste of first team football was 8 league appearances on loan at Swindon in league 2. He was always a development player, and clearly now Carrick thinks he’s showing signs of being ready.

You’re probably right, it just felt with the injuries etc odd that he wasn’t getting many minutes at all. I’m pleased for him and I think he’s given Carrick something to think about.

I thought both Watford wide men were good yesterday, first half they put countless good crosses in the box. (I wouldn’t mind the left winger)
Second half they seemed to fade and when Bangura came on, his pace and power had their players constantly chasing him as he kept bombing forward😂👏

Didn’t Gilbert do a couple of killer long passes yesterday? If it was him there were glimpses of rare talent, hopefully he kicks on.
He did, one was an absolute belter to Lath, Watford were pushing forward which Left Lath with space to run into and Gilbert, (great vision) hit a 60 yard pass which was perfect weight into his path.
The other one of note was the Thomas chance, again perfect weight of pass along the floor.

He looks a player this lad.

Yeah they were excellent.
His decision making was a little off at times in the first half but overall another good performance.
I said earlier in the thread though he looks good when he gets a bit of time and it's relatively easy to do it in 2 games when the opposition has nothing to play for.
