7 pt gap GD is 4

Why on earth does last night make it over? It's not like they were ever going to lose all 12 games, and last night was one of their easier games remaining.
I agree I would imagine many shef u fans deep down were very underwhelmed by the result and performance scraping past a poor reading side 1-0 as I’d expect they were expecting a goal rout.

Just getting by on a lucky win doesn’t build morale and confidence. Because sooner or later that luck runs out.

You can look at last night as a poor performance by them against a poor Reading team or you can say they ground out a result and got the job done - which is probably the way we would spin it if it was us, winning ugly.

I still think there is too big a gap for us to catch them - the gap will probably close to 2-3 points but at the end its just too big a gap from where we started.

The gap might be too big, it might not be, there's no way to know, but we've cetainly got a chance

Pretty gutted they won last night to be honest. Didn't have any real hopes of Reading beating them as they are completely hopeless, but from what I've seen of the match, it was absolutely dire, Sheff United looked awful, and neither deserved to win. The fact that they've managed to score and see it out and give themselves that 7 point cushion is frustrating.

We're absolutely flying and I can definitely see us closing the points gap, but the fact it's now minimum 3 games to swing it with only 11 left has definitely dented my confidence ever so slightly. I'm an eternal optimist so staying as positive as possible, and we are an excellent side at the minute, but there's a little niggling feeling in my head that those extra few points last night might see them through.

Hopefully things take a swing our way in the next few games and we can close the gap ASAP. Really hoping they go through in the Cup too.

Any stattos out there that know of any other seasons/scenarios where a team has closed a 7 point gap with 11 to go?

The championship can be a hugely unpredictable league, but looking at their remaining fixtures and their performances of late, if forced to guess then I'd estimate the Blades will win 5, draw 4 and lose 2 of their remaining matches. This would give them a final points total of 86 and given that their games tend to be tight affairs, probably only boost their GD to around +29.

I'd therefore gather that roughly 8 wins, 2 draws and a loss would be enough to pull level on points with them and IF we do that it's also very likely that our GD would improve by more than the +8 required to match theirs. If we did this yet somehow ended up level on GD too then our goals scored would almost certainly see us up.

I think both team will do slighly less well than that, what with nerves, pressure etc but it'll be very close like you suggest

Luton are top of the away form table, and above Sheffield United in the last 10 form table, so it's far from unlikely that they could get a draw.

Didn't Man Utd overhaul a 12 point lead in the last 15 games of the 1995-6 season? "I'd love it" if someone could remind me who they knocked off the top spot.

I love the optimism on here. I have one eye on 2nd and in the next breath a loss to westbrom and I'm counting the points between us and 7th.

I think we have losses in us as much as Sheff Utd. We are still closer to 7th than we are 2nd which makes me a little nervous.

Love the feeling of positivity though.

Didn’t we draw our final four games the season we went up under Karanka, a repeat of that form from United and surely it’s very much game on

I think it's done after last night. Needed them to lose that. I think they'll win 6 of their last 11, and draw at least a couple. That would mean we have to win 8 and draw three of our games, just to get level. (If Sheff Utd pick up an extra win or draw, it becomes even tougher).

Shame we started the season so poorly.
Another way to look at the start of the season is if we hadn’t started so poorly and Wilder had us scrambling about just out of the playoffs then he wouldn’t have got the bullet and we wouldn’t have got Carrick in.

They have lost 3 in 5 we have lost 1 in 8. We have a loss in us, utd have plenty of loses in them.
