3rd Test India v England

Some telling stats I think about Day / Night Test Matches

There have been 16 of them now. Nearly half, 7 of them, have finished within 3 days. 12 havent made Day 5. No draws.

Surely this result had nothing whatsoever to do with it being a day/night test, although Abel's stat is foreboding a time in the near future when "only" day/night tests are scheduled for 4 days and then we are well down the slippery slope.

The pink ball had a lot to do with it and that is only in use in day night tests, the pitch didn’t help either mind.

Do you know this for fact or is it just an assumption? Genuinely curious because I am guessing spinners haven't bowled a great deal of overs with the pink ball before.

The whole point is that England had the temerity to win the first test.
After that every tactic in the book was always going to come out.
India will get away with "preparing" this pitch because they are India and control world cricket.
They will also get away with supplying dodgy umpires, back to the old days then if anyone is old enough to remember.
England helped enormously by firstly picking the wrong side for the appalling conditions, then playing said conditions as if it were actually a cricket pitch.

England should now go **** or bust and go all out attack. They don't have the skills to try and play test cricket against spin and will lose on those wickets regularly. Might as well have a go. It can't end up as bad as that last load of dross.
Oh......... and drop Bairstow.

The pink ball is made different to traditional balls. The pink is painted on and to keep the colour for longer it has a plastic type lacquer applied.

The main observation from this test is that when the spinners hit the smooth sides of the ball it skidded on faster than a traditional ball, which is why lots of batsman just seamed to miss the straight one.

Also the seam on the ball is black and is not as easy to see as the white seam on a traditional ball, which made it harder for batsman to pick the delivery.

It would be very interesting to see how the test played with the red ball on that pitch.

Seems very suppositional to me. Wouldn’t a red ball behave the same? Maybe for not as long but that was irrelevant in this test. Surely a black seam would be easier to pick up?

Actually, that’s not the whole point. You make some valid points but this test is done with now. All that is left to do is learn lessons for the future.

Probably a little different but boy would it have funny watching them trying bat against the red ball on a spinning pitch under artificial light, Everybody would have had Jack Leach style glasses on and a Davy Lamp. That might have made up for the test being over in under two days.

As a side note about the pitch, do any of down under colleagues know what the Aussies and Kiwis made of it, especially as the next result will have a bearing on the WTC final.

So who would India rather play in the final of the World Test Championship? Aussies or us?
I believe it's scheduled at Lords in June.

Whoever of the three you mention get through are playing New Zealand as they’re already in the final

It made the news here. Showed numerous Indian cricket figures interviewed on the sports news . Pretty much all saying the pitch was perfectly playable. NZ don't really mind. They are in the Final. Cant speak for Aus who will be praying England level the series or draw.

Actually scrap that Australia need England to win.
An update on WTC final qualification:

India qualify if...
🇮🇳 2-1
🇮🇳 3-1
Australia qualify if...
🤝 2-2

Dont mind India or Australia tbh. Shame it's not England, as at Lords in summer with everybody back watching would have been great .

I know its a nightmare scenerio, win the last test and Australia are in the final. It will be interesting to see if NZ recall their players from the IPL for the first test against England at Lords to get used to conditions for the final.

Does anyone think Lords will be preparing the pitch for that match so that it will be over in less than 2 days and losing out on 3 days income?
Somehow I don't think so

There isn't enough consistent analysis to show what is really happening with the pink ball, something is different with how it plays or how the batsman play it.

When the ball gets roughed up, the black seam becomes harder to see against the pink. Simon Hughes on C4 showed the difference and it was significant.

The more glassy finish on the ball means it would skid on but shouldn't grip as much as the red ball. Hence why I would be very interested to have seen how the red ball would have played as it in theory, should grip more.

Overall, I think it was a combination of many factors that contributed to it being such a poor test match. The pitch being the main one.

Ah. OK thanks I got that very wrong.
IMO India will batter NZ. If Lords produces a 5 day track, and I expect they'll try to, Indias batsmen will make the big difference.
