3 players to get us promoted

Wonder if we could get Jayden Danns on loan from Liverpool.

Looks a player and a unit for his age. Him and Latte Lath would be great options.

That’s the kind of forward we need.

Szmodics will be costly and will demand a starting role after this season - not necessary after ELLs form

Save the cash for other positions

Signing other Championship team's best players is a recipe for failure.

A) you have to pay top price, and you pay for what they've done, not what they're going to do. Szmodics would cost around the same as we got for Chuba, so that's not happening anyway.

B) if you have a chance of getting them, it's because they aren't attracting PL attention, and probably aren't good enough to make the step up.

Our market will be overseas players, PL youngsters and solid, cheap championship veterans.

Didn’t someone on here ITK say Sorba Thomas is coming in the summer, out of contract from Huddersfield?

I think we need at least 3 signings to go straight into the first team. Assuming we don’t retain any of the loan players and also lose McNair and Dijksteel (seems likely). I would focus on a right back, a powerful holding midfielder and someone who will create and score.

My 3 would be:
1) Danny McNamara
2) Josh Laurent
3) Chuba 😍

Starting XI
Dieng
McNamara RVdB Clarke Bangura
Hackney Laurent
Jones Chuba McGree
ELL

Bench
Glover, Lenihan, Smith, Engel, Howson, Barlaser, Forss, Azaz, Coburn

Fringe
Brynn/Hemming, Fry, Gilbert, Silvera

I still think we’d need a couple more Kieran Scott gems to fill out the squad. I wouldn’t mind a new first choice left back either, but that is a very good squad for this level and should be aiming for a top 6 finish.

Edit. We would also need to replace anyone we lose from that list. Fry, Hackney, Forss, and McGree seemingly most plausible.

--------------------Sol Brynn / Zach Hemming
Danny McNamara free or Cody Drameh free RB --Max Lowe free LB
---------Alan Browne free CM / Alex Mowatt free CM
---------Callum O'hare free / Tyrese Dolan free AM
Femi Azeez free--Harvey Knibbs £1m-Max Dean free CF / Paul Glatzel free CF
--Sam Gallagher free CF-Sam Smith ----Andre Gudjohnsen £200k CF

If we are to splash the cash

----------------------Darren Randolph free GK
BN Cuffy loan -----Ladislav Krejci £5m --Harrison Burrows £2.5m
---------------------Paris Maghoma £1.5m
Sorba Thomas £4m --Igor Miladinovic £2m--Juninho Bacuna £3m
-----K Dembele £2m---Zan Celar £3.5m / Mojmir Chytil £3m

Add a nice South American CF for £7m - £10m IF Hackney goes.

Serious question here. He looks good. 18 years old never been out on loan. Over the next 12 months would he be a better back-up centre forward for us than Coburn or Forss? Or, come to that, someone in our academy. Admittedly, you often don't know how a youngster will manage when they play the real thing and he did get some pitch time with Klopp's babies(tm) in this year's cup.

But, if the aim is to make a real go at promotion next season then everyone in the first team squad needs to play their part and I don't see someone like him being at that standard.

Looks special to me. Even when he’s played in the premier league he’s looked good enough.

They won’t come cheap. I think we’ll have more targets in the second tier European leagues and top academy graduates after the successes of Latte Lath, VDB and Rogers this season.

This is most likely. Mr Scott is probably well down the line with scouting and making initial contact with clubs by this point. I’d never heard of RvdB or ELL. Everyone has now. Their value must have doubled in 1 season,

Don’t want the Blackburn lad. One good season does not make a good player.

Akpom? Stranger things have happened.

Chair is hit and miss, seems to one day be a wonder player, then the next game you barely hear him mentioned.

He does often have good games against us mind.

Don't have names but the key targets for me are:
Ball winning centre midfielder/ holding style player, does not need to be fancy/ technical, just able to pass to any other player when he wins it, and not lose it.
Right back, ideally someone young, fit and mobile. Won't be the finished article but should be aiming for someone who can get there.
Possible backup striker for Latte Lath, as I'm not convinced Coburn suits our style. Could maybe swap him out and swap someone else in for little expenditure. Absolutely must have a proven record though, in championship level or above.

It can do, when they're proving themselves at an exceptional level, above the level

Only needed to see Gyokeres play us once or twice, then it was fairly obvious he would be one of the best players in the division. The next year he didn't really get much better, but it validated what I thought a season prior.

Could say the same about Grealish too maybe, he absolutely zero for villa in the Prem, appreciate it's a higher level, but when he came down to the championship we never even got a legal tackle on him first season, it was clear he was going to be unreal. He then later repeated that the two years after, and we never laid a legal tackle on him in those two years either.

Szmodics has scored 25 goals from attacking midfield, for a team who are 19th, that's probably equivalent to doing better than Akpom did for us last year, or similar at the very least. He's got two years left on his contract though, so we've got little chance of getting him, plus we wouldn't spend what it would take to get him, which is probably ~£12-15m.

In the modern game, young players with promise sell for my re than players in their prime.

I think this is because of resale value and contracts.

Gyokeres is only 25 now. Had he flopped at Sporting, they'd still have been able to move him on and recoup a large slice of their investment.

A player in his prime will be looking for a big 4 year contract. If he flops, you are stuck with him. See Britt as a prime example.

I'd expect Blackburn to demand around the same as we got for Chuba (1 year older, but 1 year more on his contract). We can't afford that, but I wouldn't pay it if we could.

Getting Chuba back might actually be cheaper, and a safer bet as we know he can flourish in our system. I expect him to be too expensive too though.

As he has mentioned by others, I was thinking about Archer the other day. He is clearly out of favour at Sheffield, and probably will be next season as I can't see their first choice strikers being sold. As good a player as he is, he has struggled a bit this season, so a full season with a top end Championship team as their first choice striker will be exactly what he needs. Villa will bring him back for peanuts and loan him out again no doubt, so we should be in for him in my opinion. As well as Latte Lath has done over the last 4/6 weeks, a fully fit Archer would have scored an absolute hatful for us this season.
