Labour WILL renationalise railways!

I was in Munich in July and Dusseldorf in August and can genuninely say there were no issues at all with the 9-euro tickets, there weren't delays that I experienced and everthing ran as smoothly as it always does when I'm in Germany.
I'm just responding with the opinions of a group of Germans

I think I've only had one delay in Germany and that was when something had fallen on the line. DB is clean and cheap and everywhere.

I've been to Germany quite a number of times and I never fail to be impressed with their reasonably priced and efficient transport. Likewise in Poland and to be honest, most countries I've been to.

Our public transport system is outrageously expensive, inefficient and unreliable.

Personally I'd love a Government to make a huge push towards a much better and less expensive system of public transport.

Inter City back in the day was profitable so the East coast mainline making a profit is hardly something to trumpet.

Yes Nationalisation = no stikes. Right oh.

Plus do you really want Politicians running the railways.

Profitable lines could prop up unprofitable ones instead of the money flowing out of the country to shareholders.

And politicians wouldn't be running it any more than they do now. The biggest change will be no profits going abroad.

It is cheap, but ask any German who uses it regularly. They won’t have a good word to say about it
I have worked in Germany and I go there whenever I can. But if those Germans could compare their service anywhere in the country with our service outside of the South East, they would realise how good they have it.

We don't have to look as far as Germany. We've got excellent public transport that is reliable and for a reasonable cost in London. It's the rest of the country that gets no infrastructure spending on it that is the problem. If the rest of us got the spending that London has had we'd be able to compete with those other country's offerings.

Well yes, having an integrated system where you can travel by bus, train, tram or underground on one ticket is pretty standard for Germany but exclusive to London in this country.

You are kidding we would have a minister for railways with a full clival service department.
No one will think wasn't British Rail great can't wait to get back to those days.
The UK is a basket case were the railways are concerned. We are trying to make do with lines that were built nearly 200 years ago and as soon as new infrastructure is considered its classed as a waste of money.

Talk is cheap when in opposition. Where will the money come from to pay the rail companies compensation, a Labour government cannot simply do a "land grab"? Future investment will be zero with that hanging over the rail companies heads making the system even worse.

Maybe so. And I was shocked at the venom with which they talked about DB

They're on short term contracts. The country just needs to let them run out and not renew them.

I looked at traveling by train to Hamburg ( can't fly at the moment) and looked at first leg Scarborough to St Pancras return 1st class for me and missus in November........came up at £515
Then thought ferry to Holland, leave car in Arnhem with relatives and train from Arnhem to Hamburg return , first class for two......it's also a longer distance and came in at ......£172...
I know there's variables but it just shows how were being ripped off at every turn .....

But there will be an infrastructure to buy, bought from the government by those companies upon privatisation. It'll be a messy process, if it ever goes ahead.

At the moment the Government are borrowing money to underwrite the profits of billionaires and mega rich oil and gas companies.
The government can borrow as much money as it likes for spending on projects that will benefit the country and will deliver returns.

To be honest there is an argument for Nationalizing the railways as it has no real competition and could be run as a public service.
But and it's a very big But and that is as I said history does not augur well for Nationalized service's.
The past has shown that when you Nationalize such a large business it does not end well in the UK.
And like I said why would you want more political medalling.

Privatisation of such a large business isn't going so well either though, is it !!!!!
