Mason Mount

On the point of English bias at top premier clubs there are a few examples but Mount does deserve to be in the England squad

A player that would suit this argument much more would be Harry Winks

Winks was starting for England when he couldn’t get on the bench for Spurs

Find also Tom Cleverly, Ryan Mason, Chris Smalling, Phil Jones, Maitland Niles, Danny Wellbeck only getting England games because of the clubs they played for

Good post but I would have said that Smalling and certainly Welbeck deserved their place. For a very short time Welbeck was one of the best players in an England shirt, seem to remember he was the only player we had who could go past a man for a while.

Definitely. Welbeck was pretty good for England and at one point was the best scorer after Harry Kane.

Always acquitted himself well in an England shirt. Worked hard, physical, tactically astute. He was limited by his poor touch, wasn't as clinical as he needed to be and injuries ruined him - but a decent performer for England whenever he played.

Finally removed by someone that knows what they’re doing. Him and Abraham are nowhere near good enough for a top 4 club or England. Hopefully Southgate will get him out of the team and play Maddison and Grealish.
Outstanding under Tuchel and arguably the first name on the Chelsea team sheet right now. An absolute shoe in for a place in the England squad as well, as he should be given his undoubted quality.

If he was called Mountinho I doubt he'd have attracted anywhere near the criticism. Strange how sometimes as a country we like to knock our talented youngsters.

Not sure why it even began? Not like he had been terrible under Lampard at all.

See also Declan Rice.

It's strange, Lampard and Southgate were getting absolutely hammered for consistently picking him, despite the fact he almost always plays well when called upon.

He's not bad, but he definitely needs to increase his output....although he is going in the right direction under Tuchel.

The likes of Foden/Grealish/Maddison/Barnes are all out scoring him and creating more chances - and yet of those, arguably there's only Foden who is playing with better players.

I think he's a definite in that England squad based on previous caps, but I'm not sure he's better than those names I've mentioned.

Granted they're all a bit different and offer something extra compared to each other, but personally I think Foden & Grealish deserve a spot ahead of Mount...and it's not even close neither.

Once this tournament is out of the way, England should be building the team around Foden.

Totally agree.

He's the one individual who we have who can realistically become one of (if not the) best player in the world - that is how high I rate him.

It's evidence of how good he is that Pep plays him in every big game pretty much. And he delivers! Both Chelsea away and Liverpool away he ripped the full backs to shreds and scored some excellent goals. And he's only 20 years old!

Agree about Foden. When I saw him dominate the tournament when the England U-17 side won the World Cup, it was obvious that he had something I've not really seen in an English player for a long time. He has the talent to be truly world class and I think Pep has handled his development well.

Mount is not quite in the same league in terms of pure talent, but he is comfortable with the ball on either foot, runs all day and plays with his head up. I'd expect him to end up playing deeper as his career progresses and he could develop into a Modric/Pirlo type playmaker (not saying he is anywhere near that level now before anyone jumps on me). Whereas I really expect Foden to play further forward as his ability to go past people, find the final killer pass and not least, his finishing ability, means he is a constant source of goals when on the pitch.

I know some people find it hard to accept that England might ever change a losing habit at major tournaments, but we finally have a youth set up in this country that is producing a conveyor belt of top class youngsters. The likes of Grealish, Maddison, Chilwell, Mount, TAA and the ever improving Harvey Barnes are still young enough to feature over the next 4-5 tournaments, hell even the "older" players like Kane, Sterling and Stones might play for England for another 6-7 years. But we also have Foden, Sancho, Saka, Bellingham, Greenwood, Reece James, Curtis Jones, Smith Rowe, Hudson Odoi (and several more) who are 21 or younger and all featuring quite regularly for top teams. By the time those lot are 24-25, hopefully there'll be a number of 14-17 year olds we haven't currently heard of following in their footsteps.

None of the above means anything on paper of course and we still have to translate promise into achievement on the pitch. But I can't ever recall England having as many promising youngsters at one time and surely that gives us a chance of success over the next 4-5 international tournaments.

Shame we don't have the same in defence. Give us the defence of 10/15 years ago (Cole, Rio, Terry, Neville etc) and I think we'd be massive favourites to win a competition.

Although I agree, our attacking talent looks as good as anyone's out there, I just don't have any faith in our defence. TAA can't defend, although he's fantastic going forward...therefore, maybe we're better off with Reece James who adds more balance with attacking/defending? Maguire isn't good enough but we all know he'll start most (if not all) games. Just hope that Stones is at the top of his game to help Maguire through games. LB isn't blessed with a lot of options. Trippier? Chilwell? Justin?, then the keeper situation isn't great when we're constantly playing Pickford (who, although has barely put a foot wrong for England) doesn't fill me with confidence whenever I watch him.
