Stockton-on-Tees has it's own history going further back than that of Middlesbrough. Connected by a river, yes but that's all. Again politicians in the past refused to recognise that and directed funding to the town of Middlesbrough in an attempt to gain city status. That worked well didn't it. This story was written up in the mag 'Then and Now', a study commissioned by the then labour gov't showed that Stockton had more historic buildings, better road networks etc and history. It showed that if they removed the local polluting heavy industry (Privately owned foundries )direct the funding there it could achieve city status with a clean up of the area. The local Labour controlled council would not back the idea because it would be a vote loser. I think I've got this story right, and will stand to be corrected. There is some branding go on in the last 10 years:
Yorkshire Farm
Yorkshire Vet
Educating Yorkshire
Yorkshire Tea (using Sean Bean and Michael Parkinson who to me have as much in common with Taylors of Harrogate as Mark Benbow and Bob Mortimer)
Yorkshire Railway
Almost trying to create a new distinct identity to compete with the Scots and the Irish, but I don't see it with Lancashire - maybe Manchester and Liverpool feel like Middlesbrough a bit different from the rural pre industrial counties.
I am happy to say I am from North Yorkshire (born in what is now Redcar and Cleveland).
I always thought Stockton on Tees had much more in common with Middlesbrough than say Stockton and Durham or Middlesbrough and York . The river Tees and heavy industry defined the region.
Not really. I said I never “refer” to myself as a Yorkshireman, in that I don’t say “I’m from Yorkshire”.It’s like saying I was born with ginger hair and grew up with ginger hair but would never consider myself ginger. It is where it is. In Yorkshire.
You can have all the opinions you want I’m really not bothered. Mine is that you can’t pick up a town and shift it.Not really. I said I never “refer” to myself as a Yorkshireman, in that I don’t say “I’m from Yorkshire”.
Maybe just close the post then as nobody can have an opinion as you have spoken in the matter and that’s that.
I don’t remember saying that. Oh well. You can have all the opinions you want I’m really not bothered. Mine is that you can’t pick up a town and shift it.
No fairs fair you didn’t . I think you said something along the lines of you were born and brought up in Middlesbrough but you don’t think you are from Yorkshire. I’ve no idea how that is possible given that Middlesbrough is in Yorkshire but Hey ho each to their own.I don’t remember saying that. Oh well.
I said I don’t refer to myself as a Yorkshireman, that’s not the same at all.No fairs fair you didn’t . I was born in Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire but my postcode is TS. Bit of a mongrel really.
I don’t. That’s why I finished the above post with hey ho each to their own.I said I don’t refer to myself as a Yorkshireman, that’s not the same at all.
I don’t really understand why you care so much?
Never been particularly well informed some Leeds folk are they? I seem to remember them lining the streets to say goodbye to Sir Jimmy!I mentioned to friends of mine in Leeds that people from Middlesbrough claim to be Yorkshiremen.
They laughed and said they had never heard that before.
