York City friendly

Come on folks we know our limitations and they were hardly giving it 100%, more forwards and wide men to come in hopefully. Keep the faith

Warnock basically confirmed in the post-match that he recognised the formation wasn't working but was sticking with it anyway to see what would happen if it was used against a back 4.

Watmore and Tavernier were rested to avoid injury.

Was happy to see him say that. Sounds like he knows it’s not the right formation to use.

Warnock seemed a tad narked there i thought in that post match chat. He defo must have said to the interviewer, under no circumstances, whatsoever, ask me about incomings :censored:

From what we have seen this pre-season, there seems to be a surplus of lanky wingers. And no out-and-out strikers. If all the rumoured transfer targets are signed, we will have more players than Chelsea and still no goalscoring c/f!

I struggled to make much of the game as the stream was unwatchable, constantly buffering despite everything on full power and 114 Mbps. What I did see was about as comforting as the result although the pace of Jones was enough to worry the defence. Howson seemed miles off the pace and what on earth we like about Paterson is lost on me. I was thinking about going to Rotherham. not sure I want to bother now ............... waste of time money and effort

In all honesty, the moaning started as tongue in cheek, I believe, and it has moved to much more serious concerns being raised. I am no fan of warnock, but let me ask this. Given he has been handed some money and is bringing his own players in, when was the last time that Warnock did this and was unprepared for a season? Not very often I imagine.

There is another month left of the transfer window though. Not many clubs get all of their business done before the start of the season (not now they changed it back anyway).

Hopefully we can get Bryan or Brown in, or Bola is fit, for the Fulham game.

This team won’t be too far away from the first choice, and we still (hopefully) have Payero and a South American jewell to come in…

……..….Lumley

Dijksteel…Hall…Fry…Bola*

..McNair…Howson**…Crooks

..Watmore…Ikpeazu…Tav

* or new LB
** or Morsy

Bench could be a bit weak but it’s an opportunity for some of the kids like Hackey, Robinson or Coburn.

I just don’t get all the negativity.

I get what you are saying, but I just don't see enough goals and assists / quality in that team for a top ten finish. Tav isn't a winger for me, Howson looked finished last season McNair has had about six good games in midfield for us.

I'm not super negative, just don't see how we are meant to be doing better than last season with that line-up.

Lumely - I'll give him a chance, but he's been dropped to being a number 2 twice hasn't he? Didn't look great against York, if Stepanovic is leaving he has no competition.

Dijksteel - more than good enough as a RB, not a wing back. I assume Peltier is covering Fisher

Hall - Good enough on his day, horrible injury record, I assume Wood/McNair are his cover

Fry - more than good enough, I assume we'll be looking at the two LCB to cover him

Bola - good enough, not sure on his injury record and status though, Peltier & Spence covering currently?

McNair - looks a bit cumbersome in midfield but presses well and gets forward

Howson - dreadful since January, has generally underwhelmed since signing, but a good pro and covers several positions. Time caught up with him?

Crooks - solid season last year, I'm looking forward to see him play

Watmore - amazing purple patch last season, 100% effort, can he be relied on all season, lets hope so.

Tav, more than good enough, hopefully get some more games out of him this year, his energy is better utilised out of centre mid than on the wings for me.

Ikpeazu - Looks a handful, but a bit clumsy and limited, think he might hit double figures if he stays injury free.

After these we currently have almost zero to offer in the attacking options department. I was impressed with Sivi, Jones was okay but lacked any end product. Ameobi is decidedly 'meh' imo.

We need two strikers, a covering CB, a covering LB and two wingers, probably a keeper too as he wants to leave for first team football I believe.

Holiett, Kadeem Harris etc. will not offer enough goals or assists to improve us. I'm praying we get Muniz and Payero in and they are amazing.

The worry for me was last nights game looked like the majority of the ones from January onwards.

I know it was only a friendly but after the first twenty minutes we barely laid a glove on them, and the bench was absolutely brutal.

Are Tav and Watmore being rested 'just in case' or because they're playing with niggles?

Are there any time frames on Bola & Ameobi coming back? Fisher is about 10 months isn't he and Browne out till October?

We are desperately short of numbers and quality, fingers crossed for some good injury and transfer news this week.

A positive balanced opinion.....Bravo!

I think it's clear we're still cutting cloth after the "champagne years". In my opinion we previously cut too finely and barely had enough players for a 46 game champo season. Warnock is trying to correct that but in my opinion, in terms of quality, we'll start this season roughly where we started the last.

Let's be honest - Warnock is the key variable. Would we even be considering playoffs if any other (realistic) manager was in charge?

I'd be pleased with a play off challenge this season (similar to last) and absolutely delighted if we get into them. Top two is close to impossible I think.

Still feels like a massively transitional season - worst case we have a solid squad for a new manager next pre-season + two years to challenge for promotion?
