Woodgate as next manager?

I do think he deserves a lot of credit for allowing himself to be humbled by the experience of being number two after he did “ok” at Bournemouth. He could have arrogantly held out for another managerial post but appears to want to right some wrongs at Boro. Fair play to him.
Massive credit due to Woodgate. In a world of Lampards, Gerards, Terrys and Rooneys he stands head and shoulders above the lot of them. He took a lot of stick for what was an incredibly tough job for anyone. He managed better than Chris Wilder did this season and many more highly rated managers have fallen before him in the Championship.

I think the record speaks for itself. I do not, and can't like Woodgate - the man. But it's working - and how. They're doing a great job, and my neck is wound in.

By the time Carrick leaves us we could well be looking at Woody as a very experienced and successful number 2. If he's learning his trade and taking things on board then it wouldn't surprise me if he was given another go.
Experience and forming good habits can bring success. If we actually have that much heralded continuity plan well in place then why not?
Of course when Carrick eventually leaves it’s not beyond the realms of possibility that he wants to take Woodgate as his number 2.

I think Woodgate is proving himself to be an excellent assistant and someone who is clearly influential behind the scenes. As a front man with the media and general figure head I don't think he is suited to it.

I never wanted Woody as manager, I didn’t believe it was Woody and I never rated Woody as manager at any point. But I did say I thought he might make a decent #2. As it happens, he is doing exactly that, and I hope it’s the way it stays.
Could be the right career path for him. Gets to share his knowledge of the game, his, let's be honest, superb coaching skills and he can also help the young players with the world outside of football given he's seen it and done it all without the pressures that come with been the top guy.
McLaren is a far better number two/three than the main guy for example. It's not fluke that Ferguson had him for so many years during arguably their most successful period and he's back there now under Ten Haag.

TBH I have nowt against Woodgate the man, I’ve just never thought he was managerial material. And I’ve always wanted to know why he left us for Spurs when Spurs weren’t really any better than us at the time.

Whatever it is, it's working and long may it continue.

McClaren was our most successful manager and I am sure if he had picked clubs more wisely he could have had more success elsewhere. Unfortunately he was damaged goods after the England fiasco and was hounded out of most clubs often by the gleeful media causing problems.

As for Woodgate, how do you know he is proving himself to be an excellent assistant. He might be a spare part and useless. Nobody knows. Was Agnew an excellent assistant to Karanka? We were very successful, yet he was ***** as manager and him and Steve Bruce have been through God knows how many clubs.

100% no from me I'm afraid. Given how we played in his season in charge and the decision making which went on it's pretty much nailed on that our form under Carrick is nowt to do with Woodgate.

But you can guarantee that should we hit a bad patch then the blame will firmly lie at his door in some posters eyes.

The gangsters who were scared of going past Whetherby services.

There’s a lot of this in football nowadays, is a player/manager “good/bad?”. It is possible that a manager or coach/assistant may just do a fantastic job at a particular club because the chemistry is “right”. He may repeat that in his career somewhere, and he may have a spell somewhere that’s disastrous. Few managers have several good spells anywhere, it really isn’t many at all.

Regardless of how Agnew has done in other jobs here or at other clubs, he may have been a fantastic assistant here, the only person who could really judge that (in my view) is Karanka, if his remit was to “assist the manager” or “coach” the first team etc.

I haven’t asked him but given how well it’s all going at the moment, I’d be surprised if Carrick said Woody was doing anything other than a great job at present. Would certainly be very surprising if he said (or thought) otherwise.
