Will this antiquated American madness ever end??

Mathew McConaghey gave a very moving speech in the Whitehouse meant to honour the dead from Uvalde and to prod the government to create change. It's worth listening to.

No it won’t unfortunately. Only some of the gun tragedies make it to the media but today Sky News reported that since the shooting in Texas on May 24th there has been another 730 people shot dead according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

43 out of 50 states recorded deaths
23 were children
66 were teenagers

That averages out at about 52 people every day getting shot dead. Absolutely crazy!

And its spreading. The shooting in Copenhagen yesterday :(
No it’s not that was a lone gun nutter a tragic event that sadly happens.

but the difference is Denmark and the danish authorities will react and ensure that it doesn’t happen again.

That’s the difference.

The worst thing I can say is that I'm completely unsurprised that this happened today in the US.

I'd go as far as saying I expected something of this sort to happen today.

The Danish killings came as a shock, and we can be sure authorities will take action to prevent further incidents.

In the US the authorities, and now observers such as myself, regard this as a matter of course.

This one hit close to home, literally. Highland Park is about 2 miles from my house and it sounds like the perpetrator actually lived in Highwood (which is the nearest town/village to my house). While I am on holiday in Brazil right now, I knew people who were at the parade today. Indeed my next door neighbor has two young girls and they were in the parade. He tells me he saw six people who had been shot, including one woman shot in the neck. Although he and his girls are physically fine, I doubt he will sleep tonight.

For context, Highland Park is about 20 miles north of Chicago in what is known as the North Shore. This is considered a safe, liberal and affluent area (Highland Park has a kind of Yarm vibe and is home to Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins among others). It's the least likely place for this to happen in all Illinois so while people on here say it's not a surprise, i can guarantee you that it came as a total shock to the people of Highland Park and surrounding areas.
