Just read that she has alopecia. I didn't realize, thought it was a fashion choice or for a role. Not something to crack a joke about then.

Not great making personal jokes but you invite a comedian on stage what do you expect ? Always a risk

The Oscars under threat of being dropped by US tv and this stunt brings the best PR possible.
 
It wasn't staged imo, what makes it look fake is that he wasn't doing it in an uncontrolled fit of anger but as a person who was more in control trying to make a show of his feelings for the audience and his wife, those feelings might have been fake. Chris Rocks reaction is quite genuinely surprised, who doesn't think that WS is making a joke of it when he walks up there, CR is laughing to the last moment if it was staged it would have looked more serious. I have seen some of Rocks older stuff and he pushes it close to the line, but in that there is some genuine social commentary, if he knew about an individual's affliction then maybe he went too far.
