Wilko on the Brink - 12000 Jobs At Risk

Absolute crying shame
Yes, they are in tricky locations and a difficult market place
but
The leadership of the business has been a disgrace for years. Full of ego driven people (who will be ok by the way) driving the business into the ground.

As ever - those in the stores will get stuffed whilst the CEO et al get rewarded and find equally good jobs

I haven't been to a Wilko's for years. If I want cheap tat I go to Amazon, Home Bargains or B&M or the middle aisle at Lidl/Aldi. I can go to all of them in my car. Town centres are disappearing because nobody uses them. It doesn't make sense these days to walk around a town centre aimlessly. I can decide what I want to buy before I leave the house by researching on the internet.

Something needs to be done about the high street and town centres . Even the big cities are suffering. Either tax the big online retailers appropriately or completely overhaul the business rates on shops, pubs and other brick and mortar buildings.

Was talking to my mum about this earlier. She said about her last trip to Wilko:

1 it’s not that cheap anymore
2 the shelves were only half full.

I think she’s probably nailed it tbh

I go frequently. Recently for gardening stuff that was half the price of a garden centre. Household stuff too is often cheaper than supermarkets and stationary also.
Lots of elderly and town centre residents use the cafe as well where they offer warm pies, fish etc much more reasonable rates than other town centre cafes.

Garden centres are notoriously expensive though !

Disagree with you about household stuff - it used to be cheap and cheerful - I find it no cheaper or expensive than the likes of Tesco tbh.

I suspect it’s the rent and rates of its town centre locations that is part of the problem.

Always cheap for mens toiletries and household cleaning products.

Just another high street chain going under. I can't say much. I'm as guilty as most as do almost all my shopping online.

Their name is mud in my town, the granddaughter of the founder sold her shares to the rest of the family a few years ago.
In hindsight not a bad idea but for her husband being the owner of the local team who have plunged down the leagues in the last 5 years

To be fair Wilko isnt cheap tat. Probably why they are struggling and b & M are expanding.
Agreed it’s a step up on B&M and home bargains on quality. Used to use the redcar one a fair bit when I lived in Marske, im pretty sure my parents still do. Used to like the Middlesbrough one when it was on two floors and had everything, would always use it for paint, bike inner tubes etc when I used to service my car myself I also regularly bought engine oil when they used to sell Castrol as it was cheaper than motors factors before they changed to their own brand stuff which I wouldn’t risk, though the recent times I’ve popped in the shelves have been half empty. The nearest one to me is Northallerton but that one’s not great and quite small.

Always used it for holiday minis as well as far better priced than boots.

The one in Stockton was rarely that busy. I remember they used to have the upstairs floor as well but changed it some years back so it was closed off.

Definitely was cheap tat, it's exact same stuff as in home bargains and b&m but usually in a less convenient location.

Why? People's habits have changed. Use the space for something else if the demand is no longer there for high Street shops

Stockton Wilko confirmed as closing

I wonder if all these shops that are leaving Stockton will want to return when the new water front is finished.

I personally feel Stockton will become Teesside’s jewel and a town people will want to visit.

P.S. Stockton was always more forward thinking than Middlesbrough or Redcar & Cleveland Councils.
