Why doesnt gibbo talk to the fans

How often do you hear from the people who own Newcastle or Man City or Liverpool or Arsenal?

Steve Gibson has created a club management team and a football director. It's those people you should expect to hear from. Steve Gibson is the owner, and funder. He was ridiculed for things he said in the past, now there are people to communicate with fans and media he probably thinks he doesn't need to and shouldn't.

That would be fine if other individuals were communicating with the fan base but they are not and have not done for quite some time.

I suspect if he told the truth it would be news the fans wouldn't want to hear and could damage future season ticket sales ie the pots empty, it's financial prudence and consolidation. I think fans are smart enough to pick holes right through the clubs strategy. He's undoubtedly a savvy business man but he's a terrible public speaker and has made himself look really foolish the last couple of times hes made lengthy media appearances. A lengthy media appearance by Gibson illustrating the club's philosophy would be like Liz truss giving a half an hour economics lecture on the UK economy.

Only when it’s not worked out.

No one quotes anything he said in the 94-07 era, and yet, he seemed to talk way more regularly to the press etc back then.
My recollection from that time differs, I cannot recall him talking to the press very much at all. A couple of interviews with Ali Brownlee IIRC? But of course, when everything is going well those remarks are just forgotten.

The "smash the league" quote is my favourite example of fans hearing what they want to. He said, "We WANT to smash the league" (or "aim" to) there was no PROMISE to "smash the league" how could there be? As is often forgotten, there are twenty odd other teams all trying to find the manager who will take them to the PL or find the next Jamie Vardy. We are no longer richer than the rest of the teams that will finish top ten in the Championship so until we find the formula to kick on, we will blunder from one messiah to another.

Well I agree with you the things he's said over the years shouldn’t be held against him, especially not the smash the league thing. The thing about Stockton/Sunderland was just a weird mistake just after relegation, at a time when he was still almost unanimously revered by our fan base. I understand why he doesn’t give many run of the mill interviews but this season the club is in turmoil (in a footballing context) and looks in danger of slipping out of the top 2 tiers (a very rare scenario for Boro). Some communication from someone senior wouldn’t go amiss, doesn’t have to be Gibson himself.

Gibson said we'd like to smash the league, not want. Big difference and he's been misquoted ever since.

What if the most handsome and intelligent chairman in the country posted on here with snippets of ITK info and folks just ripped the pish?

Since he got pelters for his “we want to smash the league” statement he has more or less refused to make any comments to the fan base. That is simply childish and unacceptable. If you’re the head of any organisation you have to able to take any criticism along with any plaudits that come your way. He did used to make at least one big interview each season, usually on BBC tees and even used to take a question and answer session with fans on there. That’s all stopped, and you have to ask why - i think we all know the answer.

Same as Lambs "....we'll get the manager we deserve" quote. Down in folklore now.

Gibson can't win either way, talks he gets his words twisted/misconstrued. Doesn't talk he gets slated for not talking.

🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️
I agree with this, but in the current circumstance I'm not sure what we want Gibson (or anyone else for that matter) to say?

I can't think of any other club that would be different- we want news on the new manager of course, but until he's signed the contract there's nothing to say?

Ultimately if/when the performances on the pitch markedly improve - ie become serious playoff contenders - and fans stop moaning about every fooking thing Boro related, bit of stability with the manager and the clubs management structure looks to be working, he'll probably do some PR Easter time around ST renewal time.

Before this, can't see anything changing sadly. He knows what questions will be asked, he knows he's bolloxed numerous manager appointments so until things make a huge turn for the better things will crack on as is.

He only gets asked to when things aren’t going well and he’s not a great communicator, why should he be, he’s a businessman who made is money in haulage not a PR guru!
