Why do we go from looking like contenders to like a pub team so quickly

Recruitment have failed to deliver, it’s as simple as that - and i don’t buy that every team is in the same boat because lots have already done most if not all of their business. It was the same last season when the squad didn’t get what was needed till January, and it’s the same story every season usually. Everyone can see we’re woefully short of what’s required and Carrick must be incredibly frustrated at not having all of the signings in place by now. Throw in the fact we have Akpom Howson and Smith missing and it was obvious we’re going to have a poor start to the season. We’re going to be playing catch up again just like last season before we get the squad anything like what’s needed.

Can’t say that until the window is shut tbf

I think we will be ok but it can happen in the championship. Huddersfield are a recent example.

Reading were also only a penalty shootout away from the Prem a few years back.

Games are fine margins we didn't win yesterday as we have a makeshift attack and no full backs. Having said that if crooks got onto the ball earlier and Hackney goal counted we would of probaly went on to win and everyone be happy. But we fiake dto win due to not scoring that's the main thing. But we are a work in progress expect us to sign a striker and new Left Full back. Chuba will return jonny be back in the middle and we will be alot more complete.

Recruitment has been our biggest weakness for years and for me the jury is still out on those currently responsible for recruitment.

They have much to do over the next few weeks….

Yes you can because they haven’t got the required players in before the season started. It’s like going on holiday and having your suitcases delivered a week later. It’s not good enough when there’s so much time to identify what’s needed and do the necessary negotiations to get them in before the season starts. I’ve no problem with a few young development players coming in but they aren’t the answer to making immediate improvements to the side. We’ve lost 3 very attack minded outfielder players who scored and created around half the goals we scored last season. You can’t lose all that and expect to win games when there’s absolutely no one of the same quality arrived to replace them. Support and fans patience will drop rapidly if they don’t pull their fingers out sharpish. It’s smacks of incompetence and a small time mentality. Look at the fiasco with the new digital ticketing - left till the last minute to tell fans it was happening. That pretty much sums up how Middlesbrough FC is ran.

There were five players missing from the team yesterday, who were key players for us last season.

Smith for McNair
Giles for Coulson
Howson for Barlaser
Akpom for Crooks
Archer for Rogers

I'd imagine if we could have made those changes to yesterday's team we would have seen a much different performance.

The big concern at the moment is that there's so much uncertainty regarding what team we're going to end up with once the window closes. If we don't bring any players in, and Akpom leaves, we'll be midtable at best.

If we can make at least 3 good signings, and then keep Akpom, we can push for the play-offs again.

Giles and archer are not missing though we need to stop this mindset.

THEY ARE NOT MISSING
They were part of our team last season and now they're not. They haven't been replaced.

Whether we aim to do that using the loan market or whether we bring players in on permanent deals, we desperately need to sign a LB and ST.

The main concern is the performance yesterday was quite similar to the home Coventry game. Plenty of possession, but passing slow and inaccurate and the team struggling to deal with a low block and quick counter attacks.

The full back areas are massive weak points. McNair does not have the game to attack from wide and Coulson hardly offered an attacking threat.

The number of people who can’t take a defeat in a football match, it’s amazing.
I think the issue is that there’s been a clear dip in the quality of our performances which seems to coincide with certain players having gone and not been replaced.

The concern is that they won’t be replaced and we’ll suffer similar displays due to that.

Even with a returning Akpom and Howson we will still have a left side which doesn’t allow for McGree to showcase his best talents and a centre forward who by his own admission struggles to finish.

Hopefully the 2/3 problem positions are addressed and the players who are signed are up to the task.

If so, assuming we haven’t been ‘found out’ and hold onto Chuba then we’re in for a really exciting season.

If not it could be underwhelming and the metric of improvement season upon season could be super.

I’m not writing the season off based on one game but it did play out as I expected it to due to the issues I’ve mentioned. They’re reasonable concerns and I agree with you that comments like pub team are unhelpful and hyperbolic.

I am a bit concerned about our form over the last 11 games, was hoping a win yesterday would regain our winning mentality. As it stands we are in an awful run and not won in 6 with a few tough games coming up.

No easy games, we have to be better and keep working hard, we didnt play bad IMO just toothless in the final third.

I wonder whats happening with Dijksteel, it would be good to see agyemang play at RB or even jones.

How many cliches can you fit in one comment?
