Who was the most disappointing signing we’ve had

Really? You saw Emerson play before he came to Boro? Or are you judging it from his start at Boro?
It has gotta be expectations from the signing hasn’t it?
I had seen bits from his time at Porto but you are right mostly it was his early performances for us.! Disappointment comes from the waste of talent not disappointment based on expectations

Reiziger, Karembeu, Mendieta (to an extent), Alves, Maccarone (although he can be forgiven for his UEFA cup heroics).

Then youngsters such as Marinelli, Arturo Bernhardt, even Carlos De Pena with all the hassle of getting him signed!

The list of disappointments is long, starting from Nobby Stiles and continuing via Boersma, Ashcroft, Brennan, Davenport etc etc

Had too much joy watching Emerson to include him, his goals and performances were more than I expected when we signed him, I'd never heard of him.

Branco was woeful, followed by a large number of disappointments in the modern era due to the fluidity of player movements within the game.

As for Mendietta, I thought he was superb for us. Not the best midfielder in Europe any longer but he wouldn't have joined us if he was, better than I expected him to be.

Karembeu was very disappointing. I naively thought he'd be a star based on the clubs he'd played for but he offered very little when we needed much more. To be fair to the lad he worked hard (especially when Venables came in) but his influence was limited.

I

remember when he left blackburn for Villa and there were plenty on this message board saying we should have been in for him.
They deny it now.

I wasn’t on this message board then, I didn’t know anyone that wanted him. He’d already proved from his time at villa he wasn’t good enough for the premier league when we signed him. We were linked when villa signed him but everyone I knew didn’t want him because of the bad blood over that pits incident and the poor old feller that got done but eventually acquitted.

if were gonna talk youngsters then Harry Chapman, looked like we had a world beater in our UEFA Youth Cup campaign. confident, quick, arrogant, could finish, played with his head up. But his glass legs scuppered that, and last I saw he was rebuilding his career on loan at Shrewsbury and tearing up league up.

Also Nathan Porritt, all the top clubs interested, head turned, stopped performing, left us at 20, played a handful of games for Charleroi in Belgium league 3. He then dropped back into english non-league and was playing for Billingham Synthonia at 23. What an absolute waste

Phil Boersma 47 games 3 goals
Big John was coming to the end of his career so was Murdoch
Boro had finished just outside the European spots the previous season.
We payed a lot of money to Liverpool for Boersma and so he came with a good pedigree. It was expected that he would improve an already good team. But to say he was a disappointment would be an understatement.
Where was that centre forward Jack?
If only

That's not a waste, he just didn't develop into a senior. We wouldn't have heard about him in the past.

Branco.

No idea how much we paid him but if it was washers and first dibs at the buffet it was too much.
He is mine as well muttley a true icon of the global game. Renowned the world over for his free kicks (a kind of pre Robert Carlos) in serie a with Genoa and esp for Brazil.

And well he was a bit meh wasn’t he

As much as he's a cult hero, Maccarone has to be in the conversation.

Very highly rated, think there was some surprise in the Italian media he'd chosen us and we were very much seen as a stepping stone before he inevitably signed for a big club. Started pretty strongly too.

Never lived up to the hype, even if he did pay back that transfer fee with his UEFA cup heroics.
