Which Middlesbrough players should have been capped?

I did think of Carbone but as you rightly said he didn't quite reach his potential.
As for Emerson I was more talking about his time at Porto and when he first joined Boro, before he downed tools. Brazil historically quite often tried "wonderkids" in friendlies and at one point he was hot property.
Mine wasn't a response to yours. Posted at the same time, I was just slower! Just very coincidentally two of the same players mentioned.

Given some of the ***** Brazil have given caps to over the years, I think Emerson can count himself very unlucky.

Even Alves picked up a few.

Steve Vickers. There was a lot of talk at the time, no doubt only locally, and I remember Mark Page (spit) even said when reading the teams out, something along the lines of, "at number 4, an England call up beckons, it's Steve Vickers".

Might have been against Liverpool in 1995, when we beat them 2-1.

NB. I don't actually think he was good enough to be called up.

John Hendrie was the first one that sprung to my mind too.

I think if he'd been born 10 years later, he'd have had 50-100 caps given the drop off in the quality of the Scotland team in the early 2000s.
Even as it was, I'm surprised he didn't get any.

Emerson is the other obvious one. I know they usually have 1 or 2 great midfielders in there, but there's usually a bit of a revolving door in the squad behind them. Ricardinho and Dorvia got their share in the same era, but nothing for Emerson!

I always seem to remember that Tony McMahon was close to going on England's tour of USA in Summer 2005 (which if I recall correctly took a less experienced squad), the summer after he broke through but I'm sure that was laughed off before when I mentioned it.

When he first broke through McMahon was touted as a future Boro and even maybe England captain!
He was captain of that great youth side in 2004 and when he made his first team debut age 18 at Old Trafford he just seemed so assured and mature.
He didn't look 18. He looked like he had stepped straight off a Pathè news reel.
Injuries stopped him fully reaching his potential I believe.

Sadly forgotten about McMahon. Technically very good and great ethic. Body let him down and played catch up against it.

Helped that we went on the undefeated run of (12?) games when he came into the team.

Can you remember that magazine boro brought out? think it was called Riverside Roar or something similar. In each issue there was a poster of one of the players. One off these was Steve Vickers and it had the caption 'England Awaits'

Made me laugh cos i thought he was no where near good enough to play for England!!

I think it was Red Roar wasn't it?

Nathan Porritt…

I mean, how unlucky has a nailed on diamond gotta be not to take his obvious talent further than he did 🤷🏼‍♂️

It’s a funny old game…

Ah cool! getting off topic now but looks like it was later changed to Riverside Roar...
