Which Middlesbrough players should have been capped?

I bet Wheater and Gibson were a bit irritated that they made England squads but never made it off the bench.

Especially when there were friendlies.

Whether they deserved a cap is debatable, but they could easily have got one.

As Coluka’s already named the stand out, I’ll go for one of his team mates…..David Mills. Considering Revie threw caps around like confetti, there may well be something in the stories he hated the Boro?!

I had a deep-rooted hatred for John Mcginlay as it always seemed to be a case of him or Hendrie for the Scotland squad and he got the nod everytime.

Given his form for us in the early 90s he should have been in the squad everytime. Shows how much Scottish football has gone downhill (ignoring their recent renaissance) that he was unable to get anywhere near the squad let alone the first team

I know he got a couple of caps but I remember hearing Sven Goran Eriksson had watched a Boro game in the 05/06 season to check on the England players we had at the time. He asked who the starring centre back was that day with an eye on a call up for a friendly only to be told it was 39 year old Colin Cooper.

Emerson, Festa and Pearson. Maybe non where quite good enough to get in the very strong international teams as regulars but all 3 where definitely good enough to of been given A chance in a friendly.

Emerson was incredible at times for us and really didn't make the most of his talents. Don't think he got near a cap for Brazil.

Gianluca Festa was a very good defender. I think he was unlucky not to be capped. I presume there was strong competition in the Italian defence back then. Another Italian, Benito Carbone, was an excellent player and seemed to underachieve in his career. He at least played for the junior Italy teams.

Akpom is probably unlucky not to have been called up to the Nigeria squad after last season's performance. I know they have some good strikers but still think he's unlucky to miss out.

Another Italian, Benito Carbone
I did think of Carbone but as you rightly said he didn't quite reach his potential.
As for Emerson I was more talking about his time at Porto and when he first joined Boro, before he downed tools. Brazil historically quite often tried "wonderkids" in friendlies and at one point he was hot property.
