Which Middlesbrough players should have been capped?

Dean Gordon.

Think England were a bit thin on the ground at left back at the time. He was certainly being talked about until he got that injury.
very unlucky. he was flying that 98/99 season and england had some dross playing left wing back that time. Sure Steve Guppy got a cap around this time!

I always seem to remember that Tony McMahon was close to going on England's tour of USA in Summer 2005 (which if I recall correctly took a less experienced squad), the summer after he broke through but I'm sure that was laughed off before when I mentioned it.
I always remember Alan Hansen doing a bit of analysis on him after his debut on MOTD, and they were speaking very highly of him.

Amazing Hendrie never go picked for Scotland. There has been a bit of a bias against England-based players at times.

I thought Armstrong had got a cap - but he should have got more. Maddren would have had many had he played for a 'big' club.

John Hendrie was the first one that sprung to my mind too.

I think if he'd been born 10 years later, he'd have had 50-100 caps given the drop off in the quality of the Scotland team in the early 2000s.
Even as it was, I'm surprised he didn't get any.

Emerson is the other obvious one. I know they usually have 1 or 2 great midfielders in there, but there's usually a bit of a revolving door in the squad behind them. Ricardinho and Dorvia got their share in the same era, but nothing for Emerson!
sure the scots prefered to only play players who played in scotland back then. the likes of hendrie just got overlooked.
dean gordon was immense and the mackem left back got called up and not deano. i thought that was mental tbh.
