Which club are the Boro most like?

Like us, they have only ever won the League Cup (1972) so more comparable than you thought.

They haven't yet managed to ensnare the Anglo-Scottish Cup though!

Also, Stoke and Boro both had a homegrown star player in the legendary England side of the 1940s.

Brighton??? I'm not having that.
They are having a purple patch but historically they don't compare at all. We have always been bigger and better.
You might as well say Brentford. Or Bournemouth. Another couple of Johnny-Come-Lately 'B' teams.

Stoke probably the closest.

There are massive similarities with Stoke City.

A bunch of small towns that bicker.
Giants to the North in Manchester (Newcastle for us)
Giants to the South in Villa (Leeds for us)
Rivals that don't see them as their main rival in Wolves (Sunderland for us)
Not affluent, redundant industry, ignored by Government, close to beautiful countryside.
Locally owned by self made family who have now written off hundreds of millions in Coates (Gibson for us by default)
Both have small local rivals who hate us with a passion, but who we don't really care about (Vale and Crewe for them, Hartlepool and Darlo for us)
Both had significant hooligan groups.
Not remotely favoured by the media, both given grudging praise infrequently.

Won one league cup, no FA Cups and highest finish third in the top flight. Both really old clubs who are in the top 25 rankings for league and attendance (us above them in both)

I do think we are bigger than Stoke and have far more potential, for the simple reason that Teesside is more than twice the size of SOT.
One of my closest mates is a stokie and he would align with all the above.
What it sadly tells us is that two clubs have under-performed for around 150 years, and sadly given we are a much bigger place, we have been the bigger under-performers.

Blackburn and Burnley are far smaller places. We have far more potential than either. But equally, we have underperformed these lads massively.

I’ve always thought we were like Burnley or Blackburn, might have said this on this thread before as it is three years old. We are small towns punching above our weight, previously industrial powerhouses, but now largely defined by our football clubs.
Teesside is 6 times the size of Burnley of competing at the same level we would get more than them two combined

If we were a london club id say palace
If we were a midlands club id say Birminghamcity
If a south cost club probs southampton
East anglian id say norwich
A nortern club id say sheff utd
All of above have won very little in the last 50 years. Thats why dont compare us with forest, ipswich, leicester who have won leagues and european cups between them

Portsmouth and its surrounding areas can be matched to Teesside
Portsmouth = Middlesbrough
Havant = Redcar
Gosport = Stockton
Fareham = Billingham
Waterlooville and surroundings = Eston/Grangetwown / South Bank
Porchester = Thornaby
Petersfield and surrounding areas = East Cleveland
Southampton has an equal pull on Gosport and Fareham equivalent to Sunderland on Billingham and Stockton - not at all really, all joking aside.
The big difference is Portsmouth is bigger because of the two league titles in the 50's it won , it's reach into Hampshire, Salisbury is more extensive, it's bit like Sunderland's into Co Durham.
When they were doing **** in the old 3rd and 4th they were getting 10000 -15000 regular home gates even when they were crap.

I think on some fronts our fans are very similar, no one likes us and everyone dismisses our support.
I live in Fareham and I wouldn't say Pompey has any reach into Salisbury at all. Salisbury is miles away.

As soon as you reach Park Gate/Whiteley it starts being Southampton.

In general terms though, I think Boro and Pompey have a lot in common football club wise. They are hampered by Fratton Park and are in the wilderness right now, but I'd like to see them back in the Championship. Nice easy game for me as well.

London Club.. Fulham
Midlands.. Leicester

much closer imo

Over time I'd say the nearest we've been to a London club might be Charlton. West Ham historically are just above us as far as points go but they're now on a different level.

Charlton are next down the list but on a low at the moment. They can have a good following but they haven't done enough to get there in the last 20 years. They're followed by Fulham and QPR, Palace after that.

Pompey bigger club than us?
Yep, historically they are and when they were in the same division as us in 85 they were taking thousands everywhere no matter how far north. If they ever move to a new stadium or redevelop Fratton and get it to a 40000 Capacity as they hoped at one point they will sell out if they are in the Premiership.
In my mind it also go to show how much bigger we could be if we have some more trophy success in the next 10- 20years, we can consolidate our support on Teesside and reduce the glory seekers who go elsewhere such as Man Utd, Liverpool, etc and nearer at home in South Durham and North Yorkshire turn some younger potential fans heads our way.

On Pompys forum I was reading how for some bigger matches they have a supporters coach come from Salisbury.
We used to have a supporters coach come up from Scarborough in the 70's I remember as a 8-9 year being stuck behind a coach going to Ayresome and my brother was saying this was the Scarborough branch coach, we used to travel in from East Cleveland so that would fit. We don't have this anymore to my knowledge, Leeds have mostly claimed North Yorkshire, but we could get it back with a bit of success.

2 league wins and 2 cup wins, but they've been down in the bottom tier too. They lie between Huddersfield and Coventry on the all time top tier points list. They've spent 27 years less than us in the top flight.

There historical crowds are 4,000 below us and they’ve spent half as much time in the division Portsmouth are a 30,000 club imo. But 40,000 no way. On average season competing at the same level you’d back us too get bigger gates

The all time attendance figure says a lot aswell there a mid table championship club in that regard and we’re in the top division
