Which club are the Boro most like?

Looking for a change of scenery? Somewhere with a seaport and a dockyard? How about somewhere with a transporter bridge and a solid second division football team that play in red.

SSV Jahn Regensburg aka "Die Rothosen" (the Red Shorts) are languishing in 12th place in the Bundesliga 2 - the club that boro are most like.

Can you think of anywhere else in the world where you can kick dust in the dockyard, look up at the magnificent feat of engineering that is the transporter bridge (albeit 40m shorter but with the benefit of being the only known combo railroad/transporter bridge) dig a stale chip into your Käseschnitzel (cheese schnitzel aka parmo) and rue the day that your football club appointed their 38 year old manager.. their ex assistant manager and former defender for the club?

Forget Oberhausen, Regensburg is the real deal, our German Twin Club.. UDR!!

tell ye what if you like the transporter bridge, the a66, northern rail stops thornaby thru south bank and well made exciting documentary short films.. you're gonna need some tissues for this one. ja, das ist gut!!

I don't know if this has been mentioned (I ain't read the whole thread) If you are comparing on fan base only, many of our fans, the one that seem to always plonk us in the small club bracket, do not realise that comparing all time attendance average we are the 16th best supported club in England. We are higher on the list that some would believe are far bigger than us, the forests and derby's of the world. To put it another way all the clubs above us are from the larger cities and conurbations of the country and are clubs that bye and large have a history of winning things. Imagine what our fan base could have been like if we had just managed to win the old thing or two back in the day. For starters South Durham probably would not have been totally dominated by Mags and Makems as it is today.

This is a random bump, but as it wasn’t me, I’ll jump in. I would agree with Stoke City as the closest.

We have a similar track record in terms of seasons in the top flight without much in the way of trophies. We have a few more seasons. But only a league cup to their fa cup. Neither of us has a league title.

We have a similar issue deciding exactly which region we are in, as we are kind of on the cusp of two, and bleed support to both.

We might punch above our weight, as they do, if we were included in a bigger “city” that included historically different towns. Does city of “Stoke on Trent” help? Would city of “Teesside” do the same?

We play in red and white (and we are F***ing dynamite).

Lots in common.

Leicester would be a good call pre-2016.
I feel their golden age will have some lasting legacy on their status, at least for 20 years.

Palace, WBA, Brum, sheff utd and the East Anglia clubs are of similar stature.

Would Coventry City also be a fair comparison prior to their problems? Certainly a smaller top flight club for a long time. Back in the Championship next year.
Yeah, I quite like Coventry. I certainly admired their approach to playing us, while some would criticise them, they did a job on us and presently they have some useful players.
Historically, cup win aside, they were in the wilderness until Jimmy Hill, who has many knockers but was a great man in football.

My view is that Boro are like Boro and are unique, incomparable to other clubs with their roots in their own communities. Boro are the sum of the salt and sweated labour of the immigrants who built the town who turned the iron ore from the Eston hills into steel for the worlds greatest bridges. The club symbolises the life of the area and the peoples beating hearts, crafted from its steel heritage. Nothing can compare.

I’ve always thought we were like Burnley or Blackburn, might have said this on this thread before as it is three years old. We are small towns punching above our weight, previously industrial powerhouses, but now largely defined by our football clubs.

Portsmouth and its surrounding areas can be matched to Teesside
Portsmouth = Middlesbrough
Havant = Redcar
Gosport = Stockton
Fareham = Billingham
Waterlooville and surroundings = Eston/Grangetwown / South Bank
Porchester = Thornaby
Petersfield and surrounding areas = East Cleveland
Southampton has an equal pull on Gosport and Fareham equivalent to Sunderland on Billingham and Stockton - not at all really, all joking aside.
The big difference is Portsmouth is bigger because of the two league titles in the 50's it won , it's reach into Hampshire, Salisbury is more extensive, it's bit like Sunderland's into Co Durham.
When they were doing **** in the old 3rd and 4th they were getting 10000 -15000 regular home gates even when they were crap.

I think on some fronts our fans are very similar, no one likes us and everyone dismisses our support.

I'll give you Gosport being like Stockton and Thornaby = Porchy, but Fareham = Billingham??????? As a former resident of the place, I'd have to say Fareham's more like Yarm/Eaglescliffe...the price of one house on the A27 towards Titchfield would buy the whole of Billingham!

Like us, they have only ever won the League Cup (1972) so more comparable than you thought.

They haven't yet managed to ensnare the Anglo-Scottish Cup though!
