Which club are the Boro most like?

If they move to a bigger new stadium then their crowds go up, that 4000 we have over them has been helped by the Riverside which has about 27 years of better crowds The equivalent crowds we had in the old 3rd are definitely lower than theirs, especially in 86/87 and I don't know about the 60's but would imagine the same as well.

To them being further down the all time table than us, I rather have their trophies than just sit endlessly in mid to lower table in the Premiership. Robson and McClaren both became public enemies No1 for not having us in the top of the table and not having us watch Barcelona style football. So trophies even with the relegations everytime, you retain your fanbsse and maybe grow it as well. Leeds and Pompey had their success and seemed to get bigger with their travelling armies in the lower leagues.

The arguments for Pompey being smaller than us because we have have 4000 more fans on average and they have 20 + years less than us in the top flight, if you look at them cancel each other out.

They are a long way down the pyramid, have a relic of a stadium and seem a long way off coming back.
Portsmouth is the history down there, Southampton is the future.

Southampton might be in a lower division than Pompey after the next one, the way they crashed out of the premier doesn't bode well for this season.

Ok mate why not go support them then. Pompey bigger than us evidently not

Having thought about this for most of the day I have concluded that we are unique. When compared to some clubs we have effectively won nothing but can still shift 34000 tickets if we are playing well. Not many clubs are like that. Our potential is immense in my opinion, if we’d won one half of what others had the Riverside would not have been big enough.

I'm not about that, the question was who are we most like, them in my mind, but they have had a bit more success which shows in their away support even if their crappy ground can't get over 20000. Another thing which I want for us and which Pompey have is they have made a bigger impact on drawing fans from neighbouring counties, I would love to see us make South Durham Boro and the same with North Yorkshire.
Problem is people get defensive when you suggest that a club with similar demographics from down the league might have a bigger fan base than us.

But evidently they don’t. Boro is the main club for Middlesbrough Stockton Redcar and Cleveland billingham thornaby guisbrough and stokesly. So do we draw support from sizeable areas. Portsmouth throughout the majority of there history have had smaller crowds than us. Southampton are also bigger than Portsmouth

Which club would you compare Boro to?

I am remember on talk sport when Aitor picked Boro over Palace a vote went out and we were deemed to be bigger club than Palace.

I would say we are very similar to Stoke City or Blackburn Rovers.
Sheffield United

I'll give you Gosport being like Stockton and Thornaby = Porchy, but Fareham = Billingham??????? As a former resident of the place, I'd have to say Fareham's more like Yarm/Eaglescliffe...the price of one house on the A27 towards Titchfield would buy the whole of Billingham!
Do we hear no mention of "Southsea"?

Just had a look at the stats http://european-football-statistics.co.uk/attnclub/league/midd.htm
Their attendance is 3000 less than ours not 4000 and they have had less time than us being formed which accounts for possibly the gap in the top flight Their highest average attendance is higher than ours on a couple of occasions both early 50's when they won the league but we were in the top flight and not far off them. Their lowest average is higher than ours, it was 8100 in 95 when they finished 18th in the old 2nd Division and ours was 5100 when we finished 19th in the old 2nd Division in 85.
Pompey are a proper working class club like Boro, I definitely don't aspire to be like the Saints even if they are a bigger club than us which they are not.

I’m really struggling to understand why you are so bothered about Pompey.
There are similarities with us in some ways, not so many as with Stoke, but similarities.
But quite why you opened with them being bigger, better supported and having more reach is beyond me.
They are in the third tier in a relic of a stadium.
They appear in a different world to me.

On Pompys forum I was reading how for some bigger matches they have a supporters coach come from Salisbury.
We used to have a supporters coach come up from Scarborough in the 70's I remember as a 8-9 year being stuck behind a coach going to Ayresome and my brother was saying this was the Scarborough branch coach, we used to travel in from East Cleveland so that would fit. We don't have this anymore to my knowledge, Leeds have mostly claimed North Yorkshire, but we could get it back with a bit of success.
There are more Boro fans in N. Yorks than back in the 70s and 80s. It was all Leeds then. From Riochs time onwards we got more support. I think the buses probably stopped simply because people prefer cars.

I suppose because they have a passionate and loyal fanbsse, which we do to some extent, not really bothered about the new matchbox likestadiums unless they have something special about them. Give me the old stadium's anyday, I don't see as many similarities with Stoke, even though the post I saw in this thread did a very good one of giving examples of the comparisons As a wollyback Boro fan I see Boro from outside the Teesside conurbation and as well as being to Pompey a few times I see there is so much similarities ( For Me), Southampton have the Same Vibe as Leicester ( For Me) which doesn't make me feel particularly drawn to them.

Scotland - Aberdeen , Hearts , Hibs .
North -Sheffield clubs , Burnley, Sunderland
Midlands - Wolves , WBA , Coventry, Stoke , Forest
South
Norwich , Millwall , Pompey , Southampton,
All my type of clubs .

I think Portsmouth would lose so much by leaving Fratton Park. We’ve never been the same since our move to the Riverside
