Can someone please explain this to me in luddite terms? I'm a bit confused as to why Facebook wants that sort of info to begin with.

Facebook the organization (who also own Whatsapp) want as much data as they can get their hands on (although they have loads) in order monetize it in multiple ways - It's their business model - hence why their apps are free to use.

Ah ok. How do they monetise your data though? I'm just curious as I know nothing about this sort of thing...

Multiple ways, the most common is targeted advertising (around 85% of their revenue comes from this stream) which equates to more than 40 billion dollars a year.

However they're trying to diversify their revenue streams through things like digital wallet (Novi) or VR such as Occulus, however it will all come back to collecting information which they can process and identify trends in order to sell targeted advertising to companies to use. (Note this is different from selling your data, which would in effect be eating into their own business model - they want to make Facebook platforms, whether this be the app, Watch or Instagram the place for companies to advertise).

You'll see Google (Alphabet) have diversified their revenue streams through things like hardware and cloud platforms, but again their primary revenue source is from their use of data to target advertising.
 
It's good to get on something like signal because as consumers we should do everything possible to stop monopolisation. 👍🏻

Remember we're always told competition is good for the marketplace
 
I've been with my missus for 8 months.

Simply no need for what'sapp as only used it for sexting... Doesn't everyone😂?
