They're doing very well compared with other newspapers and digital subscription media.
They make a loss and are on their way to breaking even, they're not pulling in huge profits year after year.
Why do they have to make the money that alphabet makes?
Because that's the way the world works - why else would people build businesses ?

You can't rely on hobbyists to build and maintain the infrastructure that effectively controls how the world works and communicates - of course some do, but the vast majority will want monetize it which in turn will drive further development.

Libre have copied Microsoft's product, which is great and relies on a developer community to keep it up to date, but very few corporations use their software, and they're not breaking new ground elsewhere (as far as I'm aware).
