Whatsapp

They want to know as much as possible about you so you can be bombarded with targeted adverts as targeted as possible. Advertisers paid all this platforms for data about you. Its like ITV used to be before the internet it was free but you had to watch the adverts. The difference now is that organisations like Google and Facebook know more about you than you do as advertsing is highly targeted.

Signal is awful but Telegram is decent

Well signal isn’t awful it’s just functional

Telegram has more features and you can even skin it to look like WhatsApp

Best part though about apps like
Discord and telegram is proper desktop client that doesn’t need your phone to be turned on and in range. Absolute worst part about WhatsApp for me is the web system they use

It doesn't apply to Europe so keep calm and carry on
It doesn't apply to the EU. We are supposedly going to the American, less secure ts and cs

BTW it's no good just deleting WhatsApp you need to get rid of your Facebook account and Instagram, anything owned by Facebook essentially.

My mates are being so slow to move over though. Some have telegram but so many don't. From a security standpoint it's a no brainer. It's also more functional. It's a multi platform messenger so you can have it on your pc, your tablet, your phones and always keep in touch

whatsapp is owned by facebook and in cynical view they share all information so you cant have one without the other. So all the facebook data anlysis algorithms apply to whatsapp.
But in general Im sick of all these spying companies and even more so when it gets used to manipulate the masses for political purposes.

That's literally what the new T&C's are telling you they're going to do - share information between Whatsapp and Facebook.

Currently Facebook as an organization is pretty decentralized, with each BU operating fairly standalone (especially for things like Workplace, Novi and Occulus) but they're gradually trying to bring certain elements together to leverage the information they have across their landscape.

Then delete your social media, use non Google technologies, get rid of your smart phone etc.

You cant expect free platforms without giving the companies that provision it something back.

Perhaps people would pay? There's a lot of 'free' software and websites that take donations for development. The Guardian newspaper has donations as their prime business model.

Yeah, and The Guardian aren't exactly rolling it in with their current model.

There's lots of free software and websites you can use (I'm using Brave browser to type this post), however they don't make the sort of revenues that FB or Alphabet do.

FB have debated launching a subscription based model previously in order to diversify away from ad-revenue, and obvious Alphabet does have subscriptions for things like YouTube Premium, however their primary revenue stream stream is still ads.

They're doing very well compared with other newspapers and digital subscription media.

They're is great 'free' software out there that predominantly rely on donations and free developer time.
Why do they have to make the money that alphabet makes?

Functionally there is little difference between MS office and Libreoffice, but one is 'free' but accept donations. To quote them "
LibreOffice is Free Software and is made available free of charge.
Your donation, which is purely optional, supports our worldwide community. If you like the software, please consider a donation."

I ditched Windows over 15 years ago and support the development of the Linux flavour I use.
