What's your highest break in snooker?

Ha, what would you have us do? People who didn't know the game that well used to tell me I should look at going pro, reality was I wasn't anything like good enough. The gap was massive between people like me (good) and the people who could do that. I used to play with Jon Birch who did turn pro. He was about 50 times better than me and he was only a low ranked pro in the end. Mike Dunn the same. That being said I did once beat Jimmy White in a one off frame when he did an exhibition at the old Endeavour Snooker Centre.

I was better at billiards, but again not good enough for pro and there's no money in it anyway. I did beat Peter Gilchrist a couple of times in the boys league and he has won the world pro championships a good few times. But that was in a 30 minute match, again he was in a different class to me in reality.

Bertie might not have been the best snooker player, but he definitely had the best waistcoats!!

I will know you then sherlock as I still play in the local leagues (for Jack Hatfields), not first choice though. It’s a shame the clubs around here are closing. There’s not many left, even before the Covid disaster!

The least I would expect you do is walk round with a tshirt saying “Century breaker” or similar.

Genuinely can't remember. probably in the region of 30.

Now if we're talking darts, I definitely remember both times I hit 180. :ROFLMAO:

We must have played each other in the boys billiards league ;)
I knew Jonathan Birch, also played against the likes of Naisby, Gilchrist & Russell, even beat one once, but like you, they were much better than me.
As for my highest scores, they were pretty reasonable in billiards and snooker but can't even remember them.

Never really play at all now but I can pick up a cue and hammer most people at a game of pool.

...and having done some googling it seems Gilchrist & Russell are still actively playing, both coaches, one in Qatar and one in Singapore... impressive.

Yeah was still in touch with Peter Gilchrist up to a few years back. These guys are knocking in breaks going into the thousands now, ridiculously good.

I played for Newport Workmen's in the boy's league at the time we were winning pretty much everything. Who was your team?

Let's just say I was about half way between your club and Naisby's club ;)
Remember one match against you lot at your place probably around '82 that ended up in a mass brawl :D

Full sized snooker tables are bloody impossible. It's crazy how easy the pros make it look though!

Edit: That said, I'm average at pool too. Not sure I use the best technique for properly lining up my shots! (I have my moments (like with most things, days where you seem to be on (relative) fire)).

Edit2: Haven't played pool for well over a year now, what with lockdowns and so on! Something to look forward. (I wonder how long we'll all enjoy more, all the things we previously took for granted.... before we take them for granted again)!!

Need to start on a full size table, that's the secret. I was playing on full size tables from the time I had to stand on a box to reach. Never played much pool until late teens onwards and the small tables seemed crazily easy to me, the pockets are massive too!

I once potted this long blue.

Blue was on its spot, white was near the baulk cushion, near the left pocket, long straight on the blue straight into the bottom right pocket.

It was a thing of beauty.

Probably one of the greatest shots in history.

Red, black, red, black, red, pink, red, blue, red, blue, then I went in off the next red. So 35, which sounds reasonable but the first red was a belting, if lucky, long pot. The first black was over the pocket, so quite easy to get on the next red. Then an o.k. shot to get in position on a proper black. That second black was the only really good shot because the pot and the position on the next red went spot on to let me get on the red and then an easy pink over middle pocket. That went in and I had four fairly straight pots into the middle pockets, so really, out of 10 pots most were lucky/almost unmissable and two were actually good.

Wow, that break stuck in your mind then ;)

Sherlock, did you play in the Mens League for Newport? If you did you will know the likes of Snee, Nobbsy, Connor, Hawkins, Goodwill, Heller, Roberts, Singleton etc. All good players. Don’t play them for a pint! x

72, had loads over 50.

It’s a result of a misprint youth in a small village working men’s club.
I used to practice about 15-20 hours a week for 2-3 years, 20p/half hour for the light and a pint of coke made for a cheap night when I had blown all my wages on a weekend
