Whats your approach for tomorrow?

One thing that struck me after watching the Mackems earlier in the day, considering I would say both ties were quite similar in terms of league positions and squads etc, was our ability to control and move the ball, especially at the back compared to Sunderland, was night and day.

I know we see that most weeks, and MC wants them on the ball and to be comfortable, but to see it being successfully executed time and time again against a top top side really did give me even more belief in the 'process'.

Where as Sunderland looked like rabbit in headlights at the back with the ball at their feet. Night and day.
We are much better at it than Sunderland but Burnley last season were very good as well and they are playing these teams week in and week out and it's not going well. These teams are better at forcing mistakes and taking advantage of them (we know we have mistakes in us and regularly give goals/chances away from misplaced passes playing at the back).

Reality is that Chelsea are streets ahead of us and we really need them to have a big off day to stand a chance. It happens, more so in early rounds of competitions than late but it does happen. Two legs make it a very difficult task because we need it to happen twice. Last time we played Chelsea we pressed really aggressively and they just played through us. Under Carrick we are less aggressive with the press but playing against top teams is always a risk between pressing and risking being overloaded or not pressing and giving them too much time.

I think it will be minimal changes from Saturday to replace the suspended players and hoe to get to the 2nd leg level and try and nick it there. Our home and away record this season is similar so we're not scared of playing away. We've got a dismal record at Stamford Bridge though. It's going to be tough but big cup games brings out the best in players so hopefully we can see something special.

Its a massive problem that Rogers is suspended and both Greenwood and Azaz are cuptied. Especially with Silvera being away. Jones is our only natural wideman and I imagine he will play wingback again. This is why I think we will pack the midfield and play all three of Hackney, Howson and Barlaser. I think all 3 having their minutes managed on Saturday supports that too.

I agree that is what he will do.

There is also the option of playing our usual formation with Bangura wide left ahead of Engel at LB but our lack of available players means we have very little to choose from. We're only going to have Lath or Coburn (whichever doesn't start) and Gilbert as our only senior attacking options on the bench so we are very limited (assuming Crooks is even fit enough to start).

Keep it tight and still be in the tie for the second leg. A draw would be good.

Crooks and Hackney in the front three, but dropping back to congest the midfield when we don’t have the ball.

………………. Glover
……. VDB…..Clarke….. Engel
Jones… Barlaser ….. Howson… Bangura
……. Crooks…. Lath…. Hackney

I'd put Howson r/b, drop a left back, Hackney/Barlaser midfield - Jones/Crooks/Lath behind Coburn.

Or Fry back in, VdB r-b.

I think we need more offensive players on the pitch. Let's give it a go - we're at home - and see if we can stay competitive into the second leg, when we might have a couple more back. We should at least have Rodgers, who's a talisman in this competition.

It's a massive ask to get through with the absences we have, but I would genuinely fancy us if we had everyone to pick from. Shame we don't.

Listening to Carrick post Villa game, I'm fairly sure we'll try to keep it very tight and make the 2nd leg a one-off match.

The two leg will have an impact as well so we can’t go all hung ho it’s about the bigger picture

Same tactics as against villa but with hackney barlaser and howson as 3 in middle togethher. Fry back in defence. Probs crooks and latte up front. Coburn, bangura, kavanagh as attacking sub options if needed. Id be happy with a draw or 1 nil going to chelesea. 100% decinitely go at them at the off and see what happens thhen tighten up and play the chess match tactics.
