What is the best advice that you have been given?

When I was Engineer in charge of a team of inspection lads offshore there was a few of them who were taking exams etc as a part of their hopefully moving up the ladder. I used to say to them treat everybody like you would expected to be treated yourself. I liked to think I did that. It comes down from having gaffers while I was on the tools who were absolute pr!cks and bullies. I always thought I would rather not be in their position if i treat people like they did. Some of the lads did move up while I was there and after I retired and I hope they treat people as I asked them to.

This Calvin Coolidge quote is on the wall next to my desk at work:

Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence.

Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.

Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.

Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.

Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.

Asred my dear mam told me that when I was about 14, she also said, you respect people who respect you, not their title

Control the controllables, and don’t worry about anything else.

Never stop trying to improve yourself - the best version of you today might not be of much use tomorrow.

There’s nothing wrong with being ***ed off, it’s what you do about it that counts. ***ed off people change the world.

Work hard in your first 30 years then you can play hard the rest of your life
OR
Play hard in your first 30 years and then you’ll have to work hard for the rest of your life

Play hard in the last 30 years of your life when you're old and decrepit? I think there's a middle truth to that personally. Some of things I did when i was younger, I wouldn't be able to do when I'm older.

The Boro will always let you down - LowKey's Granddad

and work wise i always give out the following:
Never burn your bridges
Don't bite the hand that feeds you

To echo Low_Key, as I walked back down Wembley Way blubbering after the FA Cup Final my dad said the same thing. I named my old blog after that saying on wordpress as it happens.

If you get an opportunity to move abroad, take it. If it doesn't work out you can always move back but you will be enriched for having done so.

My Dad always taught me to "treat others how you would want to be treat yourself"

It's a simple motto to live by but an important one. In the time since he passed away last year the amount of people that have told me what a nice, genuine and helpful guy he was makes me realise he practiced what he preached. Obviously I knew it myself but it has been nice hearing people reiterate it. For us humble folk that aren't going to leave any sort of seismic impact on the world the least we can do is leave a legacy of treating others well.

Trust your instincts not your heart.

Treat everyone else as you would wish others to treat you

The things you do for yourself are gone when you die, but the things you do for others live on as your legacy
