Were you there when this happened

I was in my season ticket seat in the east stand lower.. a crazy time to be a Boro fan which surely will never be repeated.

My memory may be wrong but I’m sure straight after that game I had to leg it round to the main ticket office to queue for my cup final ticket.
I was just going to write this.

The queue after the game was supposed to be for people outside Teesside, but my guess is most of the queue had TS post codes. I queued for 1 hour then I was told to go home and come back. I said I live 250 miles away. They still told me to go away and sleep in my car or stay at a hotel. The ticket office staff stopped working at 6pm. I went to next day and the only tickets left were the powrst position or £80 for the the Olympic Gallery. I paid £80 and had a great view and seat, but that was expensive.

We murdered Chelsea in this game and Juninho was probably at his very peak with us.

Its hard to believe we were relegated that season. My strangest season as a Boro fan.

At times I forget it, but that clip really shows the class Juninho had.

The close control, skills, ability to beat people and direct running. He probably would look good in the current Man City side.

West stand upper, front row, bang in line with the Chelsea goal line.

Before the corners were filled in it was freezing cold and very exposed to the weather sat there.

Great view of a great goal.

TLF

All the joy of sunshine,
toasting green turf gold.
Tinkerbell’s toes carrying
the dreams of untold thousands;

as on weekends for just
a twinkle of time,
grown men became boys again,
grubby hands leafing comics.

And the blackeyed little town
suspended its heartbeat,
as the tiny magician
went native.

Men and women stared doe eyed,
if not at each other.
But no-one really minded,
united as we were

by this juggler of hopes,
this fairydust sprinkler,
as we all fell in love
together.

The greatest I've ever seen and will ever see in a Boro shirt, the 96/97 season was the most exciting and ultimately heartbreaking season ever, to think the names that were coming in and the direction the club was going brings a tear to the eye.
To quote Jim bowen "here's what you could have won ".

I was west stand lower in them days, near the away fans. The view of this goal wasn’t great but I saw Higgy’s Riverside opener perfectly (and all other goals down that end).

NE corner. Could just about see it through the cigarette smoke thar was a permanent cloud around me in those days. Not from me, but I think me and my Dad were the only ones who didn't smoke within a 10 seat radius in all directions

He was already working out where he’d move to next before he even received the ball - his movement off the ball and link up play was incredible. The only other similar to him in that sense that I’ve seen in a Boro shirt was Merson

Was in the North Stand 3/4 of the way back, left of the goal. Also like to give credit to Beck, massively under rated player.....on his day....and when was Rav wasn't bollocking him 😁

West stand upper, directly above where the the move starts. This is my all-time favourite Boro goal, mainly because it’s clearly wonderful and Juninho, of course, but also because there was so much at stake in that game and there was such an explosion of joy and relief when he scored. It’s absolutely tragic that it all ended so horribly that season - I have rarely felt so emotionally shattered.

Emerson was also at his peak, and seeing them just a couple of yards from each other near the touch line created its own excitement - anything was possible. TLF exploding in a generally goalwards direction was kind of the ‘the norm’ and why we loved him so much, and I remember feeling more excited at those moments than at any other time in my decades of following the Boro.

I also clearly remember my heart sinking and actually swearing when the ball arrived with Mikkel Beck - he slows down all the momentum and I just assumed something very boring and predictable would ensue. Instead, he produces a clever turn and delivers a perfect cross for TLF to finish with a diving header. It was, conceivably, Juno’s only header of any kind during his 3 stints with the Boro, let alone goals scored that way.

My one over-riding happy memory of being a Boro fan is TLF in a Boro shirt - just that image alone is enough to make me smile and fill me with joy. And this (along with him on the turf, ecstatic, at the final whistle in Cardiff) is that joy brought to life.

He spoilt football and watching Boro for me.

I've never seen a player cause so much excitement and anticipation in the crowd when he got the ball.

The fact he was so small and yet played with the heart of a lion just made me love him even more.

I knew then, like I know now, that I'll never watch a Boro player that will give me such pure unadulterated joy as he did.
