Well he's gone and it's official

I don't blame him at all for leaving, maybe his effort, desire and intensity will be matched more by his new teammates. We won't get anything near that from Iheanacho unfortunately, despite him being an improvement technically.

Think they were partly fed up with his agents behaviour, partly not wanting to block a life changing move, partly looking at it as good for summer investment. Although there’s a big possibility that Hackney goes for about 20 and rav for about 15m we still have 20m from lath minus a couple of mill loan costs. So we might have a 50m budget to sign replacements for lath, Hackney, Howson, Barlaser, Clarke, Dijksteel, Doak, Giles, Barlaser and maybe another couple. So 10 players, will give us an average of ~5m per player. It’ll be a big overhaul and if we are as successful as the last 3 or 4 windows we will move forward again. I think Hackney and lath are going to be hard to replace though.

I think you're overthinking this too much. I'm sure Gibson and Bauser are welcoming the large transfer fees to help balance the club on the whole. Not doubting we'll use transfer fees somewhere but I don't think it will be like-for-like average per player as mentioned here.

If we don’t go up then with big club interest it will be hard to keep him. I’m sure he would love to play for a premier league or foreign champs league side
Feels very similar to the ELL situation. We didn't sell him in the summer due to the bid coming to late in the window and then he was sold the next window.

The bid for Hackney came too late in the window for us to replace him, so if we don't go up I would expect him to go in the summer

I don't think we'll get anywhere near that for VDB.

Also, if we're to sell Hackney I'd love us to just say £30m or he stays. Set a ridiculously high fee like other clubs do.

Well he certainly hasn't gone to the MLS to enhance his career. At least we made a good profit on him.

fans always think footballers are in the game for trophies and medals but its money, is, was and always will be

The last three or four windows we’ve spent what we’ve earned. The club will never balance out until it has premier league income. Gibson knows this.

The average means we might spend 8 on a striker but then balance out with a free transfer or 2m reserve player

What I will say is that few agreed after about 8 games last season when I said we might sell rogers for 12m and lath for 20m within 2 seasons and invest it…we did

Personally I think the club should have let him (LL) go before the season really got started as it was always going to be a talking point amongst the players— and the fans. I just think this has been a massive distraction for the club in general and now we’re looking for another recruitment drive this coming summer. I think we gained maybe an extra £3-4m by waiting until the January window to sell him but how many points did we lose through not selling him is my problem?

As we know from experience once a player is targeted for a move you can generally say some if not all of his team mates become less inclined to talk to him, players become resigned to being mostly negative about squad confidence and morale levels.

Make no mistake the LL situation before the Cardiff game setup a huge problem within the team and probably setup a rift between some players and the manager. Now we sell him but the damage has already been done, the players might feel relieved that LL has gone but now we’re looking probably have a bigger problem with two players who are loaners — one being known for having a difficult attitude— Iheanacho. I hope he’s not going to bring too much baggage with him!!

From what I was told, the club basically pushed him out after his agent's antics and the summer Ipswich debacle. He was always looking to move after his strong finish to last season so the club decided to cash in when Atlanta came calling. ELL didn't really want to go there, he thought he'd easily get PL offers in January but his agent has negotiated a huge pay package with Atlanta.

Good luck to him, I hold no ill will towards him, that's just football.

A good Championship player and that’s not being derogatory because now Boro are an above average Championship club.
Until we get promotion we will always will have to lose our best players. There are 2 main reasons for this . One is the player wants to play in the best leagues and another reason is that we now must sell just to tread water.
It’s sad to say that Sunderland now look a step above us and are about 3rd favourites to go up.

Up the Boro.

Sunderland haven’t had 10 players out all season. The games much easier without injury crisis.

We don’t sell to stand still, we sell to invest. I’m glad we haven’t spaffed this lath money in January, we’ll get better value in the summer and there’s a big step forward about to happen

If we don’t go up I think we will shed glover, Dieng, Dijksteel, Engel, Howson, Barlaser, Hackney, McGree, Gilbert, Forss, and Coburn. Bringing in about £30m to add to the 20m from lath. I think we will spend 40m+ on a big squad overhaul. To support a squad of Brynn, Ayling, Lenihan, fry, Edmundson, rav, Borges, Bangura, Morris, Bergzorg, Azaz, and Conway. About 10 quality players will come in

I see your reasoning Boromart and I hope you are right, but giving a main mention to injuries which everyone gets to a lesser or greater extent. Good management caters for such and 7th position is not a bad position to be in at the moment.

I watched Boro through a 2 decade second tier stay and it took a big manager to get us up to where we used to belong.
Let’s hope Carrick is another Charlton in the making. I haven’t lost hope yet , but it takes a few days to get over a home defeat by what wasn’t really a vintage Sunderland side.
Up the Boro.
