We must keep Akpom at all costs

I also gave credit to him. Nobody said he didn't improve. I just don't think the improvement is as stark as it appeared.

Cameroon archer would have matched him if he was here for last year's pre-season and remained injury free.
But he wasn't and unlikely to be again

Unfair.

He’s done absolutely nothing to make people think like
Sell ASAP - a blind man could see Akpom was always going to leave after a Stella season last year. Akpom is for team Akpom not the Boro. Get what we can as soon as we can so we have some money to bring in Carrick’s choices. Keeping Akpom was always cloud cuckoo land from the desperate
Biggest load of nonsense I have read on here

Mad how many of our fans seem to want him out the door for a measly £8m. Even if he doesn’t repeat the success of last season, I’d bet good money on him having a solid season and grabbing 10-15 goals in the league. Add those goals to the fact he does so much more than just score, I can’t see in what world we manage to replace him. The club hasn’t managed to replace Giles or Archer and some of our fans are convinced they’ll be able to replace them and Akpom before the end of the transfer window, it’s bonkers

Disagree, we shouldn't (and won't) keep any player "at all costs".

It's a business at the end of the day.

That said, I'm pretty sure we'll have a sustainable figure in mind, if that aligns with where Chuba's head is at (or what he can earn elsewhere) is another question!

If there's some distance between the two parties I would almost certainly sell. January is tricky market and at the end of the season we lose a saleable asset for nothing.
Are we not in the business of winning football games?

Exactly. It’s as simple as that.

You do realise that the money won’t go anywhere near improving the squad? The same as the Tav money didn’t go to improving the squad, selling Akpom will do nothing but damage the squad
Didn't signing players like Archer, Ramsay, Giles and Barlaser improve the squad?

You are taking into account risk but not reward. Given that he has scored more goals than anyone has for 50 years, and that the reward of going up is in the tens of million, selling him is a terrible risk.

Every single transfer made in football is a gamble. The good clubs take the correct gambles. The bad ones sign Ashley Fletcher for 7 million.
I'm taking into account both but for me the upside less predictable. He may score the same amount of goals, he may score fewer (we probably all agree he's unlikely to score many more than last season?)

And even if he does, it doesn't necessarily equate promotion, as last season demonstrated.

The downside (the fact his value drops if he doesn't sign) is more certain.

Huh? If he signs a new contract with Boro today his value would jump immediately wouldn't it? You don't think we'd be discussing selling him for £8m with 3 or 4 years left on his deal?
Yes, that's what I mean - his value drops if he doesn't.

If he signs today we're not having this conversation I guess :)

Not "at any cost" as in the OP, no.

The club will clearly understand Chuba's value to the team but this will be coupled with a sustainable valuation of how much he's worth going forward (particularly including the fact he's out of contract at the end of the season).

It's an incredibly fine balance.

Let's look at this from Chuba's side as well. Almost regardless of the money we offer him, there's a very good chance he will feel that he could get more elsewhere (which he almost certainly could). If I were in his position I would 100% want to understand the options open to me.
