Warnock’s comments on potential signings

not playing Payero though is he
Not yet, hes clearly not settled yet though. If hes still not playing him halfway through the season then thatd be a problem I'd agree. My opinion of the MP situation is that he was bought to play as #10 but is mainly a club signing. Warnock picked crooks to fill that role which obviously makes him less keen to put Payero straight in.

I would take anything Warnock says directly after a match with a pinch of salt. He's usually all wound up and I suspect questions about transfers rather than the match itself are irritating to a cantankerous fella anyway.

Payero has only been here a matter of weeks, he's got to get up to speed. I doubt any judgement has been made on him at all.

Daft issues like this arise when managers drop hints here and there, like the deal for the Dutch lad. He said he wanted Akpom and then when Akpom struggled it was suddenly the club's doing. They change their tune to suit the moment, or whoever they're talking to at the time. Old school managers like Warnock must surely know that clubs do not allow one man to be responsible for all incomings and outgoings now. It hasn't been that way for 10-15 years. Coming out and dropping hints every now and then is both stupid and counter-productive. Managers know the score before the take jobs. Recruitment is a collaborative effort.

If Warnock does have a problem with recruitment then he needs to think back and remember that the club have let him make 19 signings in just over a year. There are two more very close and he will be allowed to add his left-sided defender. It's not bad, is it, during a pandemic. He has been allowed to sign two teams in a year. He doesn't have it hard, IMO. A lot of managers would kill for the backing Gibson gives his managers.

I think a side issue is with clubs not being straight up about who works where and who does what. We keep hearing about the 'recruitment team/staff/department/ but never see any interviews or direct quotes from those people involved. People still mention Gary Gill at times. It would be useful if the club had a page on the website that just said 'this is the recruitment staff and this is their remit' etc. It might stop all of the nonsense that flies around outside of the club in terms of who signs who. How many scouts, recruitment staff, analysts, etc do Boro employ? Maybe when the Norwich fella comes in he will do a longform piece in the Gazette and we will get an idea instead of the uncertainty.

We have said this on here before - the reality is probably along the lines of some of the signings will be the manager's and some will be the club's. It will be a collaborative effort at times, especially when money is at a premium. I don't have an issue with that so long as they all agree on players before papers are signed.

I suspect Payaro doesn't understand Neil's jokes, so heaven knows what he makes of the team talks - mind you they could be a joke too !!

It is more than fair to say that it will take time to get him up to speed on language as much as anything. It is a long time since you could leave one of the team out of team talks and expect it to work

I do seem to remember that Oldham had a player Groves ( I think) It was well known that he wasn't part of the team talk. At the end of the day they just gave him the ball and he did amazing things with it and usually an opportunity was created by his chaos. He was a seriously tricky player

I'd like to think that Payaro is in that class of trickyness but I suspect he is not and needs to fit into the team plan. Hopefully Leo can help getting him up to speed

I think its been the case that Boro have approached signings as a collective, rather than driven by s single decision maker, for some time now, but the concern for me is that NW seems to be distancing himself from that position, or at least his specific part in it.

The other concern I have is that clubs generally have a cycle of three years due to FFP, with one of those years being the one where they invest more heavily, in the hope that it ends in promotion - the remaining two years are more modest to allow for the average spend collectively.

If this is the season where we have a real go, I worry that the new man next season, assuming NW does retire, has two more difficult years ahead of him, because there doesn't seem to be a joined up approach at the moment.

I personally think the club are gearing up for a strong challenge both this season and next. To me it sort of feels like the chairman trusts Warnock to put the foundations down and bed a few players in before the next manager sees the true benefit. Like Mowbray and Karanka in some ways. I think there is a bit of a plan coming together on and off the field.

Am I right in thinking that Neil Bauser came from one of the big law firms in the North East - Dickinson Dees ? maybe

With a legal background he will probably be an "i"s dotted and "T"s crossed type of guy. He will there to make sure the agreement is reflected in the contract paperwork which will be complicated and written in "legalese" - try reading a big lease for example ....... and good luck

Maybe and I think the Scott appointment is a sensible one, but I'm not sure NW is entirely invested in that plan if it's true.

I think Warnock was saying he uses an app that translates whatever he says into Spanish because Payero has no English at all.

How much would it cost to employ an interpreter? Honestly at times that club. At least until Leo is out of isolation you surely have someone who can speak his language to help him settle.

Christ, we are four matches into the season, have over a week of the window to go, the squad is not yet complete.
Warnock can be judged when the squad is done.
He will have a big squad, backed by some promising youngsters.
He will have chosen an awful lot of the squad either as signings or retained.
He has his own backroom staff.

I'm disappointed there is a growing noise from dissenters far too early.

I think there is some truth to that. The club sees it as a two year plan. They may not be expecting promotion this season and giving Warnock a free hit as a thank you for rescuing us after woodgate near relegated us. NW for his part must realise this but still finding it hard to work in an environment where the club are actively planning for after he leaves. Must be strange after 40 years of being the main man.

I'm pretty sure I read that Payero spoke excellent English. Didn't Warnock say that himself?
No, not a word. Have a watch of his signing video.

Not that it matters much, he’ll pick up football-ese pretty fast and there’s so many examples of players not speaking any of the language. Argentinians aren’t shrinking violets with their mentality too, they’re as tough as they come - he’ll be fine.

Will be easier for him with Leo around though and am a little surprised the club haven’t got him a liaison officer for the bit inbetween, he’s a big investment and it would cost buttons to bring in a Spanish speaker for a few weeks. Maybe they have, who knows.

I think you get vague answers when these isn't much news.

To a manager, it must be like having kids repeatedly asking "are we nearly there yet?" all the time during a long car journey.
