Villa have competition for Rogers

I find it staggering how many Boro fans are happy to weaken our squad with just days to go before the window closing.

If this mythical striker was so easy to sign we’d have done it already, it’s highly unlikely we’re signing one with 2-3 days to go. The vast majority of clubs are want a striker and if you have one you are clinging on for dear life as you won’t have time to replace him.

I genuinely don’t see the downside in keeping Rogers until the end of the season, he’s only going to get better and we can have time to use the funds wisely. Chances are Hackney will be off too so we can use between now and the transfer window opening to carefully plan our moves.

Selling Rogers now brings zero benefits to the team on the pitch, the team that is already struggling for numbers.

A poster mentioned Scott earlier, signing for Bournemouth for £22m rising to £25m. I understand a player is only worth what someone is willing to pay for them but I thought with Rogers that that Scott deal was a good barometer for a talented player with a LOT of potential. If the Boro sell him for around half that number then I think that would be quite disappointing tbh, despite it being a hefty profit on what we paid. Personally I think we’re selling too early.

100% agree yes moneys nice but his value is on the up and as you say the idea we’ll bring in our no 1 target in 2 days is optimistic to say the least.

Scott had played nearly 100 games for Bristol before they sold him and was their star player for 2 seasons...

Half this forum were calling Rogers rubbish 2 months ago...

The potential down side , as a purely business case , is there's no offers above 8 - 10 million in the summer.
Irrespective of squad dynamics ( our golden run had crooks Jones and Mcgree more influential that Rogers btw )
A 12 - 15 million return over one " non akpom" season is preposterous on a purely business sense

There is a big difference though between selling in Jan and selling in the summer. Our model doesn't mean we should weaken ourselves mid season and we know from experience that January signings come at a premium.
It is hard to turn down £15m not long after buying him for £1-2m but I'd be tempted to hold out until the summer. Of course if Villa then come back with £20-25m we are left with no choice.

I think it is massively unlikely that any interested clubs just disappear and aren't interested in the summer.

We are still firmly in the playoff hunt and to me it seems daft to seriously harm our chances this season to make a quick profit on a player that we can sell in the summer if we need to create some FFP headroom.

Playing in a Carrick side that is set up to score goals and create chances means that Roger's value is only going up.

Cole Palmer shouldn't be anywhere near this conversation, he was on the fringes of the best club side side in the world and looking good when he did play. Rodgers has shown potential but no more than that really, 12-15m would be very good business for a club in our position.

Financial Fair Play may have stopped us signing more players this window. If Rogers is sold for up £15m, it opens up opportunities to take player(s) that we could not of.

A key issue is how we use an opportunity presented to us.

I agree why would his value go down as he’s learning all the time.

I'd rather keep him, but all this talk about not being able to replace him.... We have a team of scouts/recruitment personnel working full time probably 5 days a week every week....

We should have a list of replacement players for all positions, from all leagues, and in all price brackets. Otherwise, what are they doing?

Rogers also has 100 senior games under his belt. He’s been very highly rated for several years. He’s now starting to show signs of his potential at senior level. I just get the sense that this is Boro ‘cashing in’ a bit too early.

Obviously if the club has a player or two lined up and ready to go and they’re dependent on Rogers leaving to do that business then perhaps that would change things but I can’t see that happening.

Just my opinion, obvs, but this all feels a little rushed tbh. £12.5m seems a bit cheap.

Anything close to £15m would be an unbelievable bit of business from the club for 6 months work. I just hope if he does go that we already have someone in mind for maybe £2m-£5m that can replace his quality, doesn't necessarily have to be the same type of player but just someone to help out in the front 4.

People keep quoting £15m, but the offer is £15m including add-ons.

Remember Djed Spence went for £20m including add-ons, and we only ended up with £12.5m.

So take away the add-ons, take away City’s cut and what we’re actually banking is very likely to be less than £10m.

Doesn’t sound like such a great deal now does it?

Especially when you consider Jones is likely injured for a month, so we need someone with a bit of pace and creativity on the right hand side. Before anyone says Forss we need him in the striker role as the other two strikers are always injured.

It's not homes under the hammer, we haven't just spruced Morgan Rogers up a bit to make a quick few quid.

To continue the housing analogy, Rogers is like a house in a rapidly gentrifying area where the ceiling price is yet to be established.

I don’t think money is the main goal. Obviously we want the best deal, and early offers weren’t even close from Villa, but we have enough cover and I say good luck to Rogers.
We are a selling club and that’s fine to me,
I think we’d be fine without him anyway with what we have in the squad and the potential to get someone else is (might already with Azaz) is high.
Have a nice sell on clause so if he blows up and is sold to Real Madrid for £80m we get a % and the beat goes on..

Go get Sorba Thomas for the Wide position
