Viktor Gyokeres

I think the thing that is often missed from the conversations of Gyokeres.

We quite literally would not have been able to afford the price we were quoted - it wasn't a choice not to sign him. It was an impossibility with FFP rules in place.

It would have been a get promotes or risk points deduction situation.

His form also shows why coventry were able to get more money than we were able to for Chuba.

Don't get this "would have got a points deduction" its not like we have splashed the cash buying players.
Plus I think we would have only been interested had we gone up and its a whole different ball game then.

I just meant - if we "had splashed the cash" it would have meant we would have broke ffp rules if we didn't go up.

Some would have taken that risk.

You can go back another year to this one where 70% of people said we shouldn't sign him!

hello

Plus let's face it, Gyokeres had zero interest in signing for us or anyone in the Championship. It was all about the top tier for him.

33 games
30 goals
10 assists
2nd player in all top leagues Europe to be involved in 40+ goals for this season.
€100 million release clause.

Where's he going next?
Don't.

I always said we should have broke the bank on him, as even if it didn't work out we would have still easily got our money back. I was saying that after the first game he played us, where he completely destroyed us, and we were meant to be decent.

Not sure whether we had the money or not, but it would have been one hell of an investment.

Looking back at those threads there wasn't many more up for buying him at any price, than me

9 goals 3 assists so far in 24/25, he ended up with 43 goals and 15 ass from 50 last season (all competitions). not a bad £20m spent by Sporting

I remember saying on here in 2023 that I'd have swapped Chuba for Gyokeres in a heartbeat - and this was after Akpom was coming off an epic season.

Gyokeres' potential was huge and he's currently fulfilling it.

He will be sold for £70m+ in a year or so time.

Brighton rarely let a good one go, but they have in this case.

Not signing Gyokeres was a massive mistake.
His talent was obvious, his fee would have been £15m and the club had just sold Spence and Tav that same summer. I did broadcast this a lot at the time.
The next summer he was beyond us and he will be at Arsenal next summer.
He is a magnificent centre forward.
Playing with Akpom at 10 would have been fabulous the play off season and they would have got us up.

I've never been so confident in a potential signing actually fulfilling their potential with us as Gyokeres. He was so obviously a top class player.

Him and Akpom together would have been fantastic. We do have to remember though that it would have been under Wilder and not Carrick because a better start with Wilder would mean he wouldn't have been sacked and we probably wouldn't have brought in Archer in January either. Coventry would obviously have been weakened as well so who knows how it would have played out. Even without promotion we'd have comfortably got our money back on him.

If we had signed Gyokeres when Wilder was manager I doubt Akpom would have been anywhere near the first team. Particularly not as a number 10.

It wouldn’t have been worth it

I doubt anyone will put up £80m+ for him in the current climate.
Osimhen was rumoured to be joining a number of clubs for £100m+ a year ago and is now playing for Galatasaray. He was a bigger name scoring goals in a much better league and is a year younger.

He would. Wilder played two up front. Muniz and Akpom would have been the front two. Akpom was injured by the time Muiz arrived so not sure if they played together under Wilder. It would have been Gyokeres instead of Muniz.

I'm not so sure. If Muniz had signed in time for the start of the season I reckon it would have been Muniz & Watmore upfront with Coburn as back up. Or maybe Forss.
Wilder just didn't fancy Akpom. Didn't give him a squad number or include him in pre-season at all until he realised he had no choice. He had been banished and was training alone.
