Trump

Still, if you take out the city where 1 in every 38 Americans live it doesn't seem too bad...

Wow BR14 there's fiddling the numbers and there's that. Aren't you ashamed of thinking things like that?

Trump has now backtracked in a very br14 manner so you can see the similarities.
Trump has basically given the governor's the green light to implement their plans as and when they see fit, even though that's what they were going to do anyway.
It's like telling your muddy dog it is ok to jump on the sofa after the dog has already jumped on the sofa.
It sounds good if you are stupid and unable to think for yourself.

Of course, targeting the WHO and China is a great way to change the subject, even though Trump is on record as personally praising Xi and the WHO for their handling of the outbreak in January.

Well he sort of does as President. As always with Trump he's drilling down the question to its essence (not necessarily accurately) and making a statement that needs far more context.

Groups of Democrat Governors want to open up their states before the medical experts give the Ok. I assume this is politically motivated as the Democrats are desperate to stop Trump any way they can. But to open up the economy in a haphazard fashion could be disastrous.
Did you even watch this news conference br? You seem to have got completely the wrong end of the stick. The Governors are not wanting to open up their states in defiance of Trump's wishes - he wants to force them to open up and saying he has total authority to do so.

Even Fox News business analysts know how badly wrong he got this. See the first few minutes of the clip below.

Br14 gets more Goebelsian by the day.
CtC I had to look up Goebelsian, I assumed it was a derivitive of Goebeles. In any case I learnt something today Goebelsian means "Tell a lie often enough it becomes the truth"

I think br14 is just a tory groupie to be honest. Or perhaps he is just playing devils advocate

Has all the hallmarks of a Borisette doesn't he? Slavishly defending someone on his "side" no matter how ludicrous or deadly their actions are.

It's what I really can't understand about modern political though. This divisiveness that leads (I presume) normally sane people like BR14 to defend someone regardless of what they do.

BTW CtC: Thanks for introducing the word Goebelsian into my life. Once again another trait of modern politics that is sad. Finding out it works on some people with even the largest of lies is really depressing.

This is absolutely correct. As Business Insider put it:
President Donald Trump said he would be "authorizing" governors of all 50 states to make decisions when it comes to lifting coronavirus restrictions, even though it is already within their power to do so.

So Trump is in effect, acknowledging that he was wrong yesterday to say that he had "total authority" to force states to reopen and admitting that it will be up to each state governor to decide when and how to open their states back up. In a typically Trumpian move though, he's trying to make it look as if he's the one giving them this authority whereas anybody with any knowledge of the US constitution knows this isn't true.

The federal government only has power over the states in those matters where the Constitution says it has. Deciding when to re-open a state's economy after a global pandemic is not a power conferred on the federal government by the Constitution.

The same Business Insider article quotes from the 10th Amendment to the Constitution, which makes this clear, as follows:
"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people".

Even a stopped clock is right twice a day.

For example, when he shut down travel from China (would he really do that if he thought it was a "hoax"?) New York public officials reacted much as posters on here. They called him racist, and promoted exactly the opposite approach. The Director of Public Health encouraged people to party in China Town - she actually suggested ignoring the virus. And in early March, The New York Mayor was still suggesting people go to the cinema.

Their reaction to Trump is one reason why New York has been so badly hit. The main reason is probably the number of travelers from China before travel was stopped. That and travel from Europe (who did not stop travel from China).

As for Hydroxychloroquine, it's madness to reject this drug because Trump talked about it. Trump mentioned it because of a highly successful French trial. It's part of the standard protocol for Covid-19 in China, and in New York, doctors are taking the drug to avoid developing Covid-19. US doctors prescribe it to people with moderate symptoms to try to avoid severe disease with some success - though all anecdotal until the trials are complete.

The drug isn't just used for malaria. It's also used for arthritis and lupus - i.e. it's an anti-inflammatory. Inflammation is in part what causes ARDS in Covid-19 patients. I'd already read about the drug before Trump mentioned it, and would be happy to give the drug a try should a doctor recommend it. Like any drug it isn't for everyone.

It's really dangerous to take too much notice of US media. Especially the more rabidly anti-Trump media. They've lost all reason. I have colleagues in the US that no longer watch any mainstream news media because they can't trust it. The trust numbers for media in the US are terrible. The BBC is the most trusted channel at 80%. Ironically Fox is next at 60% (which means even some Democrats prefer it). CNN is somewhere around the mid 30's.
Looks like more people died after taking Hydroxychloroquine than those who didn't when they trialled it.

Why not read the post instead of jumping to conclusions. I was talking about his decision to initiate a state of emergency. Only he can reverse his decision to impose a state of emergency.

I also wrote "Whether the states choose to accept his decision is up to them - just as it is now. ", because state governors have always had the right to ignore his statements. As a fair number of Republican governors have done already.

and the idiot in chief fired the man in charge of vaccination research, for calling him out on it.
You believe that? A president who can't even fire people who actively conspired to remove him from office, is running around Washington firing doctors because they say nasty things about him.

If he did that he'd do nothing else than fire people. Most of his administration can't stand him. I doubt he even knew the guy existed.

Interesting. Trump said he has never heard of him. You believe him?

So the conclusion is simple : the fact that it came direct from Trump’s mouth I VERY much believe that he knew him. Trump is an avid watcher of social media and TV. Bright’s name couldn’t have been avoided at the time the President was peddling this drug irresponsibly

Latest musings - can't believe these as they were in the Guardian:
“Medical doctors,” should see “if there any way to apply light and heat to cure”, the president said. He asked Dr Deborah Birx if that’s possible.

Fevers are the body’s way of apply heat to treat itself, but she hasn’t heard of it being used as a treatment, she responded.

“It’s just a suggestion,” Trump said. “If heat is good and if sunlight it good, that’s. a great thing as far as I’m concerned.”

And:
The DHS’s Bryan is asked about the president’s suggestions that disinfectants be injected into a person.

“We don’t do that within our lab,” Bryan said.

“Maybe it works, maybe it doesn’t work,” Trump interjected — but disinfectants like isopropyl alcohol definitely has an effect on “stationary objects.”

Note: If you are not a stationary object and are, in fact, a person, please follow medical advice and do not inject disinfectant into your body.

And:
No he definitely said them I watched him live when he said it.
Although on the subject one of the scientists they had on had some very interesting things to say with regards to how the virus reacts to exposure to heat AND humidity. May explain why some countries have faired worse than others.

I'll let him off the first one.
