Tory`s win Hartlepool by 6940 votes.

Firstly the jingoistic, incompetent, lying bumpkin needs to go. I don't see any appetite for that with winning Tories and he could still be here after the next election. When people then want change, a moderate, grey "Major" will scrape another election. It'll only be then that the historic view of the mess the country is in will lead to a new "Blair" winning such a majority that people will again say "the Tories are finished as a political party".
yes it's cyclical and we are at the bottom of that cycle

Brexit, Trump, Anti-vaxxers, climate change deniers.
It was unimaginable that these attitudes would even exist, 20 years ago.
Millions of people just lap up the lies and deliberate misinformation that they are spoon fed and, as an act of rebellion, they vote for those behind it all

Tory propaganda machine wins through again for me. Taking credit for minor victories (or even things which aren't victories at all, but are sold as such) coupled with the promise of a better tomorrow.

I know the post above re: Cummings was meant tongue-in-cheek (I think?) but I'm starting to come round to the idea of taking them on at their own game. A race to the bottom in terms of lies, spin, fraud and deception cos it's clear the average voter doesn't give a toss about ideologies, their financial, personal or societal well-being anymore. :cautious:
The Cummings comment was tongue in cheek, but its time to face up to 21st Century politics in the UK. Its no good calling people stupid because you don't like the way they vote,it needs to be discovered why they voted the way they did. I accept that they won't be able to give a difinitive answer but listen to their answers anyway and take them on board, don't retiliate with the often trotted out line 'well you'll regret it'.

Unfortunately there is a disconnect between politics and daily life, a lot of people no longer feel that their vote makes a difference or that the way they vote impacts their life.

Labour need to bring in a spin doctor who will get the message on Facebook and twitter (or whatever it is the kids are using thses days), they need a leader who is brash and who is prepared to do a kids TV programme on a Monday, do a stint in the jungle the next day and appear on Andrew Marr at the weekend. The leader of the Labour Party needs to surround themselves with personalities that are larger than life, that appear at local football games for no reason or are seen in the crowd at Glastonbury.

Politics is no longer politics its a popularity contest which is frightening when you think about it, but the only way to change it is from the inside and to do that you have to play the tories at their own game I'm afraid.

Me and my familly have been Labour for ever, I’m still hanging in there.

The day after the last general election I was in Bishop Aukland on familly business with my sister. I said to her I couldn’t believe it had become a Tory town. She said to me “Look around, it’s a shïthole and it used to be nice when we were kids. People ask what has labour done for them”

People want change, many will vote for anything that isn’t status quo, in my view this was reflected in many Brexit votes and the general election. Labour need to show them policies and a route to a future they want, they aren’t doing that.

I've read this sentiment quite a lot over the past few weeks but can anyone tell me what the people who have decided to vote Conservative rather than Labour actually want? What is it that has made apparently 'dyed-in-the-wool' voters of a traditionally left-leaning party move to the right of politics? They can't have done it to protest that the Labour Party has moved too far right for them because that wouldn't make any sense, so what is it? Is it purely Brexit? Is it a protest against anyone even remotely left being viewed as soft, metropolitan, liberal, woke on TV and in papers and almost everywhere? If people are protesting about a lack of opposition then is the best way to do that to vote for the government? I can't get my head around that.

I would love to know the reasons why people are switching to the Tories after more than a decade of Conservative-led, ideologically-driven austerity.

There'll be a lot more former Labour voters voting Green or Lib Dem or NIP or just not bothering to vote than there are switching to the tories.

And the new tory voters will probably have previously been UKIP, Brexit, Lib Dem or people not bothering to vote at previous elections much more than they'll have been Corbyn Labour supporters.

Surely this man says what he means and means what he says?!

This video is from March this year when Mr Johnson visited Teesport:

Did you remind her we have had a tory government for the last 11 years?

This wasn’t just 11 years of neglect though, it’s neglect since we were kids and I’m 59.7.

I’ll give you 11 years of Tory neglect, certainly the austerity years, but there’s 30 or 40 years before that of being at best taken for granted by previous administrations.

When the polls were coming out you dismissed them due to their "small samples".

Those results turn out to be very accurate, "low turnout"

It's time for a reality check.

They were small samples and had every right to be called as such by anyone who follows polls, accurate on not.

I'm not excusing anything, this was a bad defeat in politically strange times with the Tories absorbing the right wing parties and Labour voters staying at home.

Low turnout is always a bad thing, regardless of who wins. 6 in 10 felt for whatever reason voting wasn't for them, an overwhelming majority.

The vast majority of those years were under a tory government, I was no fan of Blair government but its fair to say they invested heavily after years of tory neglect

Maybe Labour should have given the electorate reasons to vote for them.

You’re holding candles to feet today Roofie 😁 good work 👍
Over the years we`ve all heard people, such as ranting racists, calling people out for being anti-white, foreigner and -------- loving, commie......, why dont you just .......go away.....blah blah.
Its always useful for people to explain their opinions; thus to enrich our cultural and political understanding?(y)
I remember being told I was a "commie" friend of "spongers" by supporting building of social housing to eliviate the increasing homelessness ........in the mid - 70`s!
