Tommy Smith - Out for the SEASON

Really like Tommy Smith, old fashioned no nonsense hard as nails defender. We will miss him but I would love to see Djiksteel given the right back slot. I think there is a really good player waiting to burst on the scene this season in Djiksteel and he could almost be like an outstanding new signing for us. UTB
 
Gutted for Tommy as that's a horrible injury to get over, with modern surgery should be ok, but it used to be a career ender. Could be a sliver lining if I'm completely honest, teams were targetting his lack of pace, for sure will miss his leadership but I think VDB & Djiksteel are better options personally. Sometimes these things allow others to flower. I think Lenihan getting sick/injured has been a massive reason in our new found ability to be able to defend, Fry looks much more assured, Engel as well. Lenihan's a great leader, bang average champo defender.
Wish Tommy well, but I think we'll be more than ok, others will flourish I'm sure.
 
Tommy is a massive loss, he links well with our right hand side and his leadership is a big loss, the way he sorted out those players goal celebrations and to focus, in front of the Mackems, was legendary. Personally I’d like to see Dijksteel at RB as I think he offers more to Crooksy and Jones going forward and has the pace to recover when his mind wanders occasionally. RVDB is a decent defender but understandably lacks the forward thinking skillset of Dijksteel.

Get well soon Tommy lad, we’ll miss you.

Rav is not 20 til next July, so playing a full season at a consistently high level might be expecting too much. He was really struggling for pace towards the end of last night's game.

amazing experience for him right now, this is all miles in the bank for him, but for me Dijksteel is right back (pun intended) in contention now.

We may need to dip into the market in January though. Weren't we said to be looking at Ben Johnson at Wet Spam? He has played one league cup match this season, 23 now and needs to be playing every week. I wouldn't be surprised to see a loan in January with an agreement to sign him in the summer if we get promoted. It's a move that would suit him as well as he isn't even making the bench right now. He's a good modern athletic fullback
 
Gutted for Smith. He is a leader and the team is better for him being in it. Hopefully he has a good recovery and can continue playing football.

I’m gutted for the team because he really is a super solid presence and a ‘rock’ for the team.
That said, I’m reassured by the performance of van d berg last night and dijksteel is back…just smith offers something that is consistently solid but let’s see 🤷‍♂️.
He’s injured and that’s that.
 
Gutted. Some of the combination play between Smith, Crooks and Jones against Birmingham was excellent, and he's just a very solid defender at this level.

I'd also like to see Djiksteel get a run of games, but I suspect Carrick will stick with VDB.
 
Hope Engel just had a tight nadge and is back for the weekend. Jones and Djksteel have the potential to be great going forward on that side but requires us to be very solid across the rest of the back. Are there any youths at RB waiting in the wings?

Gitau is the usual RB for U21s but think he’s injured and he isn’t ready anyway.

Sykes has played RB recently but he’s really a CB

Nope - Cain Sykes has been playing RB for our U21s but he's playing out of position (he's a CB).

George Gitau was our U21 RB last season... Not sure where he's gone, but he hasn't featured in any games this season.
