Tommy Smith - Out for the SEASON

I’m just wondering, when Tommy picked up an ankle injury in a preseason friendly, whether that has left a weak spot around his Achilles; and that’s what has done the damage. Super frustrating for such a model pro. Hope you heal quickly Tommy. You’ll have to join Leo in the cheerleader team!

It is an awful blow for Tommy and I really feel for him. I also wish him well through his painful and frustrating recovery. I remember talking a lot to Rhy Williams as he recovered twice from achilles nightmares. It is a shocker.
I personally believe Dijksteel is more than capable of stepping in and being even better. If Danks can work some one on one magic with his concentration then Anf can become an outstanding player. His link with Jones and Crooks is very very good.
VdB looks like a centre back playing right back and I'd be a little more concerned about Smith's loss if he was going to be the permanent replacement for the season.

Forgive me for asking the question, but how many of these players havent been up to standard so far?

Anyone tell me how many "development players" have been hindering our progress? Of those players mentioned below, how many havent improved, put a shift in, scored important goals, stopped potential goals, defended like trojans, gone from poor starts to becoming key players? With all due respect to other posters, its a myth we only bought "development players".

We`ve spent money before on players who`ve been knocking around the for ages and got nowhere. We`ve got Clarke on his way back and plenty of options in midfield, up front and in defence. Lets dispence with the myths [please].

New yhis season - many hadnt played in this country, never mind the Championship: have these players not played a part in getting us to 7th in the table thus far?

Van Den Berg?
Bangura?
Engel?
O`Brien?
Greenwood?
Latte Lath
Rogers?
Gilbert?
Silvera?

Lets not forget those experienced players who have been here before the season started. There are also our "developemnt players" in the Under-21`s and Under-18`s who are waiting in the wings. Players such as Cartwright, Woolston, Howells, etc, etc, etc

You are forgiven

Very true, but do we develop him out of position?

For me, we need the tried and tested, otherwise why wasnt Rav in over Smith if development is priority.

I think MC will stick with Rav, he seems to to prefer him, but my preference would be AD

Rav was in ahead of Smith. It wasn't until Rav got injured in the warm up against Sunderland that Smith came back in.
Personally I prefer Dijksteel as like you say he offers more going forward but Rav is a very good option to have.

That was because Smith was injured at the start of the season though, and then got injured again when he was brought back in too quickly.

We started the season with McNair at right back and VDB on the bench.

Something I’d never thought I would say when he signed, but Tommy Smith will be a big miss. I think VDB will hold onto his place and is improving at a good rate. I’m sure he’ll get better offensively too. His defensive work last night was first class.

I don't think he'll play another game for us, whether we go up or not. That's sad, I'm sure he'll stay around the dressing room to be a leader off the pitch.
Yes at his age a year out is huge, and a ruptured Achilles being the cause may terminal for his career in the top two divisions.

I certainly don't think we've seen the last of him. Was watching match of the day the other night. Everton game was on and I heard Ashley young being mentioned. I assumed it was some other Ashley young. Googled him and realised he's been playing the last two seasons at villa! 38 years old and still playing premier league football. Our Tommy is a spring chicken.

Massive blow - solid RB and his experience will be missed. Seems a bit of a leader too with his communication

We’ve got Dijksteel and VDB luckily but in my eyes Smith is first choice if fit

Great shame for Tommy. I think Rav and Dijksteel will be rotated in the right back spot depending on the opposition. Rav is not 20 til next July, so playing a full season at a consistently high level might be expecting too much. He was really struggling for pace towards the end of last night's game.
