Tommy Smith - Out for the SEASON

Terrible news. I'm gutted for him. It's almost 20 years to the day since I ruptured my Achilles, it took until the day of our trip to Cardiff for the cup final before I stopped using crutches. It'll be an achievement if he makes it back for the start of next season.

Gutted for him. Rough to have to have that happen after just coming back from another reasonably lengthy injury. Big presence in this team as well, one of our leaders on the pitch I think, he'll be a miss.

Carrick`s comments from his Monday pre-Norwich Media Conference:

Injuries?

[Smile] We`re kind of counting up the bodies if Im honest at the moment...giving players as long as they can to recover and find out who`s fit and who`s not going tomorrow. That`s the nature of it. That`s why we wanted the squad that we assembled....the strength in numbers. We know over a period of time everyone`s going to play a huge part. It comes around and I`ve said it before, if you feel you have`nt played or been out the team a little bit, it [opportunity] certainly comes round quick. The boys keep themselves ready, train well. That`s part of it, so [we`ve] got no problems. Disappointed with injuries….but its an opportunity for somebody else and we`ll make the most of it.

Reading between the lines from that, McGree, Forss, Lath and Engel will be ok for saturday (y)

Oh no.

Gutting for everyone involved. He'd just got back to his best.

I can still seem playing a part though off the pitch, he’s a leader and will be supporting the team as if he was still playing.

Really bad news; been a model pro during his time here, and has performed well above the standard of a bog standard championship fullback, which is what I took him to be when he joined.
As has been said, it's his leadership and communication that will be missed, more than any outstanding physical or technical ability that he has.

Got to be Dijksteel for me, Rav is fantastic defending but offers very little going forward (demonstrated by his 1 cross last night! 🚀)

Dijksteel can at least get involved in the Crooks/ Jones link up a bit more, similar to Smith
The thing with signing all these "development players" is you have to develop them. There's no point signing them if they don't get minutes. We have almost too much in centre defence now - though it does remain to be seen what level Clarke will be playing at. I'm wondering if they were expecting paddy to go in the summer. Can't see RVB getting in at centre back so I think he will be first choice.

It does leave us weaker going forward. Which is why losing Smith is such a big blow.

He said McGree wouldnt be ready for the weekend, nor Darragh, but hopefully that will have changed come Saturday. (y)

McGree? Lenihan? Any closer for the weekend?
No.

Very true, but do we develop him out of position?

For me, we need the tried and tested, otherwise why wasnt Rav in over Smith if development is priority.

I think MC will stick with Rav, he seems to to prefer him, but my preference would be AD

We do seem to be suffering with injuries this season. Opportunity for a few young lads to step up to the squad.
