Tommy Conway

Assombalonga was absolutely dreadful. The damage that deal did to our finances over 6 or 7 years means it’s probably the worst bit of business the club has ever done imo.

Conway on the other hand, he looks great. A grafter, a real No9, a bit of quality, a good finisher. I really like him. With him and ELL, we could quite easily have not one but two 20+ goal strikers on our hands.
What would be most amusing is if they did that without at any point operating as an effective strike partnership. Just two lads taking turns.

Do you think he’s as good as Ian Baird or Wilko?
Defo better than Baird who across his career was a bog standard second tier player. He went through a purple patch with a great partnership with us but he was nowhere near technical enough.

Wilko is a different one. Early signs are similar ability levels based on what we have seen. Totally different players mind will was a beast in the air and combative, Conway more technical and pacey. Of course Wilko did it in the top flight for Everton and Watford and us. So Conway is yet to prove that level yet.

I know what you mean about Baird but I honestly don’t think you should say it out loud. It feels wrong. Like he might read it and then I’d feel bad that he’d seen it.

It’s sort of like Georgi Kinkladze. Just a jobbing footballer outside of one absolutely blinding spell with one club, a club where you somehow achieve cult status, where everything aligns and, like you say, partnerships happen.

Ian Baird is probably a bit like Uwe actually isn’t he. You do a blinding diving header that people just cannot forget. I mean you graft and you do lots of good things across a season, but things align and you’re somehow etched in folklore on the back of a handful of memorable contributions as opposed to 5-10 years’ worth of graft.

Yes I was uncomfortable posting that, but it’s the truth if I’m honest

I know what you mean, when I look at his career it doesn’t tally with what we think about him. People on Teesside absolutely love him but outside of here he’s a 7-10 goals a season man you’d see in the Queen’s Head of a Thursday night. But that’s the beauty of football I suppose.

Baird was a battering ram. Slaven has often spoken about how he profited from Baird pinning and battering centre backs. He had the odd hot streak but was always more of the knock down provider for BJS. Wilko was, in my opinion, a better footballer than Baird. Great in the air and a consistent goalscorer for many years with BJS and JH. Neither Baird nor Wilko can be compared to TC or ELL really. The game has changed so much. I'll settle for saying both were great in their day but perhaps not having the technical ability we seem to demand in a modern day striker.

It’s a shame we sold Baird , just when we had that second goal scorer we sell him 🤷‍♂️
Yeah but we replaced him with Wilko! When we went up with Lennie’s Lions, we had Wilko, Slaven, Hendrie and Ripley. That is absolutely mesmerising. In the modern game that’s £100m worth of talent. That’s without even factoring in a 17 year-old Jamie Pollock.

Don’t forget that Wilko was played 32 times in a first division title winning season, and scored 12 times. I’d have him above them at the moment until they do it in the top level

Conway’s stats are good. Think Lath has a better chance of being a premier league striker but time will tell. Be interesting to see how Carrick manages them both with both being in good form.

Conway is proving to be an excellent signing. It's great that we now have two quality strikers who we can rotate. It's reminding me of when we had Nugent and Rhodes and Karanka used to rotate them.

You could see Lath was desperate to get a goal when he came on, just as Conway was when he came on 2nd half vs Oxford.

Its a good comparison apart from nugent and rhordes couldnt hit a barn door

What I like about TC and ELL is that they both try to get goals, whoever starts, and whoever replaces them as a sub. Like last week at Oxford. It’s like they’ve got their own little compo going on. MC alluded to an interesting point yesterday regarding partnerships, and how well TC and Ben Doak play together and how well Manu and Della play together, over the past few weeks you can see that happening.
Btw, Wilko’s goal at Newcastle was brilliant, haring half the length of the field to grab the winner, those were the days to be in the away end!

His knee was shot when we signed him. He is the perfect highlights package player. He’s the sort of player who scores two braces a month against Rotherham and Walsall and you see his name on Soccer Saturday or Final Score on the off chance. It *feels* like he must be good. Like Kenny Deucher for Gretna.

The good doctor!

Tommy Conway looks to be developing into a very good player and he is still a young lad, 22. It's up to him how far he goes.

I think lath is also a very good player too. A bit older, he is 26,i think. Let me check, no 25.

They are different players and I would expect them each to play in games where Carrick thinks they are best suited.

They will both get high teens low twenties this season. Goals per games should be higher for both of them given they can rotate, sub for each other and play in the games that suite them, rather than being out only option.

Yeah agree with this. Competition can work to help elevate performances if you have the right mind set
