Tommy Conway

His knee was shot when we signed him. He is the perfect highlights package player. He’s the sort of player who scores two braces a month against Rotherham and Walsall and you see his name on Soccer Saturday or Final Score on the off chance. It *feels* like he must be good. Like Kenny Deucher for Gretna.

He’s like Craig Mackail-Smith. You beat Scunthorpe 5-0 and he’ll score all five. You need a goal to pinch a point in an important game that means something at the business end of the table, he’s nowhere to be seen.
Didn't he also, as per our usual scouting approach back in the day, run us ragged in a game a year or two before joining?

I think a few fans were using that to base their opinions on his signing.

Whatever it was it's a bargain
Seem to recall that the club announced it as an undisclosed fee? As usual these days I suppose. I'd have no bother believing £3 million with a further £1.5 in add ons. Just seems a lot, a fixed fee with 10 months left on his deal.

But as you say, great deal it's looking now, and we'd probably be looking to double our money at least if we wanted to sell.

Conway is currently scoring 1.08 goals/90 mins when playing in the no9 since joining Boro.
That is an unbelievable return.

To put it into context.

Lath was 0.96 goals/90 mins in his purple patch from March onwards last season. He's 0.62 goals/90 mins this season.

Archer was 0.72 goals/90 mins in 22/23.

Conways goalscoring record from the no9 position is the best we've seen at Boro in the Championship.

With two functioning knees and three stone lighter, he looked a real prospect. The version we signed for £15m was 10% of the player.

Blimey. He looks like he’s in a boy band, but then the one we signed was the boy band one but when he comes back to do arena gigs because of an expensive divorce.

When he came on in the 6-2 he could have just rode the game out considering the game was won but he got himself on the scoresheet. That mentality makes the different for players potential

…and a division lower, you missed that important bit. He was always a low technical and tactical player, relying on pace and power..that only gets you so far then you hit a glass ceiling

Do you think he’s as good as Ian Baird or Wilko?

Can we* work out the scoring stats for Uwe Fuchs?

*you

  • Haha
Reactions: B_G
I don't think he actually played that well today, but he he is playing as a no9 and you can't really argue with in the end. Same can be said slightly of Doak too. He will play a lot better but have less end product.

Can't find his minutes played for Fuchs.
But he was 9 goals from 15 starts. Less subs in those days so even you assumed 80 mins played per game (he probably played more) then he would be 0.68 goals/90 mins.

Fuchs had a good scoring record in his short time at Boro but from memory I think Fuchs scored a lot of winning goals which obviously gained him cult hero status very quickly as his goals were directly winning us points.

Was it £4.5 million or 'rising to'?

Would we pay nearly five million for a non nailed on first choice at the time, young player of potential in his last year?
something like..

£1m - transfer fee
£1m - on 10 goals
£1m - on promotion
£1m - after 50 appearances
£1m - sell on

one of them ones.

Way better than Baird
Up with Wilko
Baird is the benchmark for our Mam, but for me it’s Wilko. I was 8 in 91 and my first game so 8.5 when he signed from Watford and got started. Those first three games where he had a thick ‘tache and a shoulder-length perm count in his favour as well, obvs.

Wilko was SO underrated as a footballer. Who was it against when he scored the goal where he controlled it on his thigh, WHILST turning the defender around, and then slotting it into the net. I think Wilko was the Perfect 9. At that time, I judged the other strikers, the ones you saw on telly, against him. Alan Smith, Brian McClair, Romario. Ronaldo. They weren’t as good. I’m sorry, they just weren’t.
